is the 1901 census at ancestry complete? I cannot find my whole family! I have tried variations of names and surnames and every other trick I can think of but no luck.

I think there are some pages missing from all censuses. Try asking other to search also, sometimes 4 pair of eyes are better than one. Also try searching on the oficial site, it costs nothing to search and sometimes it can give you a lead to then search ancestry. Suzanne

From the 1901 govt site: 'Are any parts missing on the 1901 returns? Parts of Deal, Kent. You may also find that the odd page has suffered damage and so certain information is missing. ' In my experience, the 1901 census is very badly transcribed and the chances are that your relatives are there, but not in the index with the correct names. You might try searching on their first name, birthplace and age to locate them. I have found oodles of errors. Even when I did find most of my Gray family, I couldn't trace two, as their birthplace Limpenhoe had been recorded as Limperhoe and Limperhal. I have Curvey as Purvey Smoothy as Lenorthy Matthews as Maththews (!!) First names Charity as Chanty Jeuel as Denel Lemuel as Leonard and there are some I still haven't found. nell

Hi Nell, Thanks for the info on Deal in Kent on 1901 Census. That may explain why a couple of my families vanished into thin air!!! Gail.

New Romney in Kent is also missing. I contacted them to ask when it will be added but just got the standard reply. In the end I gave up waiting and looked them up on the 1901 census site. It is always worth searching on there anyway for somebody you can't find on ancestry because the searching on the 1901 site is free so if you find someone on there, note down the details it gives you for free such as age, district, etc. and often you can use those to find them on ancestry, also you may be able to find out if the village / area is missing from ancestry and if it is you could do what I did and pay up to view it on 1901.

thanks guys. As far as I know they were born in middlesex and moved to surrey by 1901. I forgot its free to search 1901. I think i've tried every which way on ancestry but if the transcribing is that bad there may be no help!!!!

I've lost my grandmother and her mother (and stepfather) too. I'm going to start a new thread - 'Who have you lost in 1901 - and where? ' If I'm trawling for mine I'm happy to trawl for others - especially those in the same area! Jill

Was told by someone that some of London's records missing..fire pestilence or plague I expect. Don't forget some familys just weren't at home on night of census. Chris

Mine must have been at home - they were too poor to go out anywhere - anyway with that number of kids they were probably ... again. Oops sorry - expect I'll be slapped over the wrists for making innuendos on the boards! Jill

ELIJAH BRYAN b1867 Mdx Acton FANNY BRYAN b1871 - no idea on birth as she is illusive prior to marriage and this first census after marriage ARTHUR HENRY BRYAN b1894 (this is correct have b/c) FRANCES BRYAN c1895 WILLIAM BRYAN c1896 ALBERT BRYAN c1897 EDWARD BRYAN c1898 REGINALD BRYAN c1899 As far as I know the chlidren are born in MDX. Obviously the last 2 might not have been born yet depending on their actual years which i haven't found yet. When Elijah and Fanny married they stated their address as living with Elijahs parents EDWIN and HARRIET BRYAN who appear on the 1901 census by themselves (102 Rollo Bridge Rd Acton, which is now the Post Office) My grandfather knows they moved to Surrey as this is where he used to visit them and they had a grocery store. Elijah and Fanny do not die until the end WW2.

wow Kate I would NEVER have found that!!!! The enumerator must have had a hearing problem!!!! LOL. Or Fanny was giving the information and she was apparently deaf so would talk different (she wasn't born deaf) Thank you!!!!!! thats not the first census eliJah has been transcribed as eliZah and Edwin is actually Edward! Funny that Edwin is actually Elijah's Dad's name.
