My comptuter seems to have gone crazy and i cant figure out what to do, can anyone help please. Normally when using an address i use frequently, i.e GR or Ancestry, i go to the address box, click on the little arrow at the side and it brings down all my recent sites i have used. This has gone, i now have another search box. The only way i can get into a website is to 'search' for it and then when it comes up, click on it, but after looking at the site it no longer keeps the address. I have tried system restore (I have windows XP) to yesterday when i know everything was OK, but it still comes back the same, i then tried going back a couple of more days and it says it is unable to do so. Help please, is this some setting on the machine doing this? Many thanks Mo

Try right clicking on the gray area on the bar next to File Edit View etc , Should get a list , make sure Address Bar is ticked The search box should have an x in it , click there to close it

Peter I no longer have an address bar, it has changed to a search bar, i have just tried typing in Ancestry (the full address) and it takes me to a whole page of websites that deal in ancestry. Mo

Mo if you can't see the bar with File Edit View etc, you may have IE in full screen mode. Hit the F11 key

Hmmm Try this go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced scroll down to 'Search from address bar' and tick 'Do not Search' then click on Ok to close the options window

Also If you have followed some of the PC Cleanup tips on here the History of visited websites would have been cleared and so clicking on the arrow next to the address box would bring up an empty list until you have visited some sites again

Peter Clicked it off and back on again, no visable difference on the screen Fred I tried what you said, went to do not display from search bar, nothing, now i have forgotten what i took it off of!! What should it be on please? I havent done any cleaning up at all, turned it off last night and it was fine, turned it back on today and this is what had happened. Is i possible to use system restore more than once in a day do you know? Bit concerned that that wouldnt go either. Mo

Hi Mo Probably had 'Just go to most likely site' ticked. System Restore can be run if there is a restore point to restore to . On the calendar that comes up, think they are marked as Bold. Fred

Fred I have put that back again to where it was - dont want any more problems. As the computer was OK yesterday i resored it back to then, but i still didnt have an address bar, not knowing when it went wrong and what time of the day it actually went wrong, and what time it had restored it back to, i thought i would take it back a few more days, but it wouldnt have it, tried the 20th and 19th of this month. I have just been looking at what 'rogue' search bar this is and its called 'my web search' Had a look in the add/remove programmes and its on there, would it hurt to delete it? I also have a Google search bar on computer, which is what i normally use. I presume the address bar is normally installed when windows is first put on machine. Maybe i ought to start looking through their search pages for help. Mo

Fred and Peter Many thanks to both of you for your contributions. I have now got my address bar back. Think it was because i deleted that 'search bar' (Love to know where it came from) All that time i was going to spend this afternoon on my tree, now i have got to cook the tea instead. Mo

MY SEARCH BAR was installed most likely by a site you visited - it's spyware. It should be uninstalled opposed to deleting it as deleting it does not remove the program completely.....you should also download an anti-spyware program, such as AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL: http://www.lavasoftusa(.)com/software/adaware/ Remove the ( ) from the address. The first time you run it, run Ad-Aware in safe mode. Judy
