I know this is going to sound absolutely stupid but when I got this I imported my Tree from here forgetting I have both mine and my husbands family on there , Is there any way I can have 2 seperate family lines alongside each other but not neccessarily together or do I have to delete one family and get another FTM package, please dont laugh us oldies are still learning.

Do you mean you want to start a completely separate tree for the other family? If so, you can go to edit in the toolbar at top of page then click on 'new', give your new tree a different name, then start adding your information. If this isn't what you mean, I'm sorry, but I'm only just getting my head round it too. Kath. x

Hi Valerie, No, you can have as many family trees as you like on FTM. i have my own plus 3 friends trees as well. To open a different file/tree, open FTM and go to FILE....OPEN... to chose another GEDCOM or for a new tree go to FILE....NEW...to start a new line. Sam x

Valerie. I was the same when I started!!! You can have as many trees as you like, as long as you have a big enough computer. I have a separate one for each line and one complete one. this gives me 8 trees in all at present. Name each tree separately, I use the main name of each line and then if you wish you can merge the trees together. When you open FTM the last tree you were working on will open automatically just click on File open and open the one you want. If you want more than two open it may ask you to close one. Each time you edit any tree it will automatically save your work when you close it.

It is possible to have two separate lines in the same FTM tree, but not intentionally. It usually happens when you import idividuals that are not connected or wwhen you delete 'connecting' Individuals. Look at an all in one tree diadgram and you'll se the 'orphans' We run 4 separate trees in FTM - one for each of my parents and one for each of hubby's. When we refresh GR or Ancestry the approriate tress are merged into temporary trees before generating a GEDCOM. The only overlap is us, so they merge easily. Linda

To separate your trees. I would close FTM. Go to My Computer and find your tree (usually in C:\FTM) Copy and paste the tree files They will be called 'Copy of' Rename the Copies to what you want it to be. You can now go to FTM and delete the individuals you don't want for each file. (Use File>Open to open the file you want) Linda x

If you want to create two trees from 1 go to file export you are then given options about who to include save it as an FTM file. Repeat with the other line and you will have 3 trees one complete and the other 2. Regards

Valerie I have a major advantage - a career in computing and a copy of FTM that's been around on my PC for 4 years or so! Happy to help anyone if I can! Linda

Hi Valerie Ron from Genealogy Printers uses FTM and he put a very useful set of instructions on here the other day for 'splitting' a tree/Gedcom. I'll see if I can find it and nudge it up for you, but I can guarantee it works as I used the instructions successfully myself. Mandy in Somerset PS: Found it and nudged it up for you
