I was wondering what info do you get on a medal card and where do i order them? Thanks

would soldiers get a medal just for serving during the war? my great grandad was killed Jan 1915. I've tried him on the NA site but nothing comes up for a medal card thanks

You don't have to know his number to download the medal card. But if your relly has a common name and you don't know his rank, regiment and / or number it might be very difficult to know which medal card is his. On the other hand, if he has an uncommon name it will be easy! The medal card will also tell you what medals he received (dur), and the first overseas place that he served in. Kate.

Yes all serving soldiers would have been awarded at least one medal

Oh, the website address is http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ Linda - have you tried just with his surname and initial? Because some of the medal cards don't have the full name on. I would have thought he should be on there. What were his details, and I'll have a nose round for you? Kate.

You can get Service Records for WW2 , takes a while and costs £30, from http://www.veteransagency.mod(.)uk/service_recs/service_recs.htm

I believe that for a WW2 service record from the address given by Fred you have to be the person whose records you order, or their next of kin? Is that right? Kate.

For living persons, has to be the person concerned. For deceased , it has to be next of kin, for which it is free. For an other direct relative, child, grandchild etc it costs £30, with consent of next of kin. Fred

Pretty sure the MIC s cover all ranks, and civilians who served abroad in a theatre of war. Fred

Anne, We have in on the CWWG site, and Kate found his medal card, unfotunately they have his name spelt WRONG have emailed them to complain. am disgusted that a young man who died fighting for his country (leaving a widow and 3 young children) can't have his name right on his own medal card! steps down from the soap box :)
