Mt Gt Grdmother to the best of my knowledge was born Juessica F Coomber, Croydon, 1893. Family talk says that she married at least twice if not three times but I have not been able to find any marriage records. With abit of perseverance I trawled the BMD and found a son, William Thomas (surname fits) born 1913, Croydon, mothers name Coomber. A daughter (my Grdmother) Lilian Plested, born Croydon, 1914. A daughter Florence born same 1916 and another son George same born 1926. I have just received birth certs for Lilian Plested and William Thomas but unfortunately they have left me in limbo so to speak! Williams cert just has a dash under fathers name but under mother it says Jessie Thomas formerly Coomber, William was born 57 Forster Road Croydon. Lilians cert has father George Plested, Mother Jessie Thomas formerly Coomber living at 58 Forster Road Croydon (next door!) I know I'll probably have to get the certs for Florence and George, just to see if they did get married albeit later but can't understand why on Williams cert the fathers name is missing (or am I being abit naive?) Can't find death record for Jessie under any name either!

Possible then that William wasn't the son of Mr Thomas but Jessica gave him her surname anyway, and as the real father wasn't at the registration he's name couldn't be put on the certificate. Maybe the reason the 'Marriage' didn't work out???

Yes Carrie, I had thought of that too! You know......my Nan would be mortified if she knew I was finding out all this stuff! lol Jen

Marriage?: Are you sure you have right Jessie for mother????? I think possibly your jumping to a few conclusions with the births that you have? If tihs is Your Jessica born 1893 then she would of only been 9 years old when she married? Marriages Mar 1902 >>>Coomber Jessie Croydon 2a 517 Hawkins Augustine Hibberd Croydon 2a 517 King Margarate Croydon 2a 517 >>>>Thomas Henry Croydon 2a 517 Sorry to be the bearer of possible bad news. I think your right and you should try and ttrack down her marriage to George first and take it from there.

Jen It's possible Jessica married a Mr Thomas therefore her surname would legally become Thomas, William is not her husbands child so he is illegitimate, however she can still register him with surname Thomas as this is her legal surname..... ***i see Suzanne has found possible marriage to Mr Thomas*** Yes it's looking like two different women, I know Jessie can be a shortened version of Jessica but the 'F' is missing too, i bet that is for 'Florence' which she named one of her daughters.... And what a very very young bride too???

I Know, that generation preached at us and our 'Wayward ways' but we were innocent compared to what they got up to:)) Maybe Jessica wasn't sure who the father was Mr Thomas or Mr Plested, so left it blank? wouldn't you love to do a DNA test on relatives?: Cor! imagine if it was easier to do, i think the whole worlds Tree's would change drastically, lol:))) Nite Carrie

Yes Folks, I had found all the info listed below. To be honest I was starting to wonder if I had the right Jessie myself and so did find the marriage to Henry Thomas in 1902 to another 'Jessie Coomber'. The other Jessica F fits alot more than Jessie, ie. with family names and ages etc. Have looked and looked for marriage records to George Plested and cannot find anything. There are a few George Plesteds' that would match (one more than others) but I can't say which one he is. I know where Jessie is buried but the headstone has worn so badly that you cannot read it anymore and I cannot find a death record. I think I have hit the 'brick wall' everybody talks about here and will probably never know now.

Hi Yvonne Have thought of doing that too. Just spoke to my Auntie re all this and she told me that I was confused.....lol grave for Jessie doesn't have a headstone anymore, it was rolled over years ago. Am fairly new to all this so could you tell me, if I rang the cemetry what info would I have to give them? Jessie was buried with her grand daughter who died a few years before her we think. Jen

Thanks Yvonne Yes I do have a rough idea were the grave is which is just as well as Queens Rd Cemetry inCroydon is huge! Also as my Aunt (sounds silly as she was only a month old when she died) was buried in thesame grave but a few years prior I have a full name for her so hopefully will make it easier. Many thanks Jen
