Does anyone have any ideas on how to trace a birth in the Netherlands? My great grandfather born there in 1837 - would like to find out his parents name etc. Thanks in advance Mary

Try GENLIAS on http://www.genlias.nl/pls/gls03/logon?cid=- Then click on where it says 'English' at the top and you will get it in English! Kate.

If you try familysearch.org and look under research help it has a section on the Netherlands including a useful glossary.

Thanks Kate just tried that and drew a blank - but there again surname may not be spelt the same. You are not the footballer's daughter are you - used to live in Ullenhall Road, Walmley, Sutton Coldfield?????????? Thanks again for suggestion. Mary

Just wanted to show you some support Mary! I've been searching for my DP's gt-grandmother's birth record for the last year (b. Holland 1887) and his family have been trying for longer than any of them care to remember. We have her marriage certs (both of 'em lol), an old passport of hers, her death cert, but I'll be b*ggered if I can find a record that proves the woman was ever born... Then again, her first husband is no flippin easier to trace. Oh the joys of geneology at times! HUGS x x

Hi Rach and Phil I know what you mean - this family tree business can be SSSOOOOOOOO frustrating - yet when you get a HIT it makes you feel so good. I have been doing mine on and off for two years then found a helpful friend on Records Office and found so many rellies it gave me the push to carry on. My motto is NEVER GIVE UP and when people offer to help grab it with two hands! Good Hunting!! Mary

I was chatting to a Dutch guy a few weeks back, who had researched his own family. (Oh, the shame, we were chatting in English and he could even cope with English handwriting from the 1800s!) I gather that information is held locally, rather than centrally. This suggests that you either need to know exactly where your ancestor was born or, if the name is unusual in the Netherlands, to start with a telephone directory or electoral roll to find out where it is most common and contact people to see if they know anything about their own family history. Good luck!

I don't know whether this is any help, but a rellie of mine was born in the Netherlands in the 1860's,but married in this country. I looked at National Archives & found an entry for his naturalisation papers. I obtained the papers from NA,it gave date & place of birth, parents names etc.,& lots of other info., Good luck

Hello Mary, I am an ex-pat living in the Netherlands for the last 20 years. I can speak fluent Dutch so maybe I can help you with your search. What information do you have so far? In the meantime, here is a site in English which might be helpful: www(.)rootsweb(.)com/~nldwgw/ regards Krissie.
