My gg-granddad (have certs to prove his name) William Henry Pannell, does not appear to have been christened or baptised or whatever. The 1891 census says he was born circa 1868. I have found two possible births for him, one in 1867 and one in 1869. I don't have any evidence of his siblings or parents details to match up against a census or a birth cert, so how do I know which one is mine? I'm having the same problem with the man I believe was his father George Pannell. He seems to have disappeared (with his whole family) from the 1881 census for Hampshire where he should be (with his whole family) as he had another child there in 1882. However, how can I prove that this George born 'about 1839' in the census is the one I've found being born in the right place in 1837?

Did this William marry? If so, can you get his marriage certificate to check his fathers name? Give us the details you DO have.

Do any of the occupations on census match those on any family certificates? ( Don't tell me, .... they were all labourers ?) Gwyn

If the 1891 census gives his birth year as c. 1868, then he is more likely to have been born in 1867 rather than 1869. You could order the 1867 birth certificate and give his father's name as a checking point, and they will only issue the certificate if the father's name matches what you give them. Kath. x

All, I was going with the 1867 Alverstoke being most likely as he lived there all his life. However, the 1869 Portsea one is still possible as that's only next door! If I stick with Alverstoke that makes his father George Pannell born 'about 1868' in Alverstoke. But how do I know for sure that the 1867 one is actually mine - as George is a more common name?

Jim, This is definately the right family. But how can I prove that the George Pannell born in Sep 1837 from the parish records is the same one born about 1839 in the censuses? Unless there is only one George Pannell in the early census 1841 or 1851??? He married in 1859. Any further help or advise is appreciated. Does this thing sometimes rely on the balance on probabilities?

Yes, that and spending the £7 to see if it is right parents!
