Please could someone look for Mary Ann Elizabeth Pannell in Alverstoke Hampshire. She was born on 19/3/1843 so would be about 18. She had several siblings but the next youngest may still be at home - Isabella Harriet born 20/9/1840, about 21. Their surname is Pannell, but their mother's surname I think is now Alderslade (first name Elizabeth born 26/8/1826 Alverstoke) as I believe their father died and she remarried both in 1847 (she didn't hang around!). I initially thought that she was really unlucky as her new husband wasn't on the 1851 census with her (she was the 'head'), but I've only found two Thomas Alderslade's dying, one in 1839 and another in 1867, so he was somewhere else in 1851? I'm hoping the 1861 will show still back with the family maybe?

Well almost, but I'm pretty sure she was born in Alverstoke, which is in Gosport in Hampshire - quite some way from Bentley. I've just dug out the road map which shows Bentley as nearish to Petersfield area, I know there is another group of Pannell's from that part of Hampshire, but neither myself nor the lady who is descended from them can link the two sites yet. Thanks anyway :-)

Cathy & Margaret & Nicky Yes! William is her older brother, but I didn't expect to find him still at home. It's curious that her and William are listed as 'in-laws' when Elizabeth is their mother - is that normal? Did they not have the 'step-son' convention back then? The date of birth for Thomas also fits with the death I've found in 1867, listing his rough date of birth as 1805. Brilliant, thanks everyone for your help. Heidi

LOL! I presume you have already looked for old Thomas in 1851, very elusive! I can't find him. I've found another Thomas born same place 1810, but married to a Mary. Perhaps he was at sea or badly mistranscribed? No surnames that look remotely right! Margaret

Elizabeth is down as Seaman's wife in 1851, I've checked image and Thomas is definitely not on there.

And now I've found Elizabeth deceasing in Qtr 2 1882. That all ties up that little mystery. Thanks all for your help everyone, much appreciated!
