Ive just re read your question - i.e. is the 'source' the same and the answer is yes Ed but freebmd is not complete.

i,ve beeen looking through all three sites and am unable to find any entry for a couple of my verified ancestors. i guess more than a few went unregistered in the 1800,s.

Didnt need to be registered until 1875 Ed. Having said that I couldnt find a whole family of kids called Groves and Reggie bless him, had a search and turfed them all up registered as Graves. Seems like there had been a change of name - probably superstitious, dont know but I took the chance ordered the cert and as the father Groves/Graves had an unusual occupation - lithographier/printer I could verify this was indeed my girl. Mother and fathers first names also matched. I had a similar prob with a marriage - a Dixon to a Haines - turned up as a Dickson to a Hains! Why dont you put the names on another thread on records or here to see if anyone can do a miracle job for you?

Hi Ed It ought to be be. But, in the past, the old handwritten volumes would be replaced with typewritten ones as they wore out. I don't think that anyone has a definitive answer as to when that process finished. So it is possible that there are different editions of the indexes in existence. As freebmd is available on Ancestry, it is probable that they both use the same set of images, but that is not necessarily true of 1837Online or the microfiche copies available in libraries.

What do you mean by 'verified', Ed? If you post up some details perhaps we can help you find some of them... Kate.

i,m beginning to think that i have first and second marriages, and/or single mum children. in 1871census, elizabeth miles, born abt 1865, norfolk, inmate, heigham, (workhouse i guess). in 1868, yarmouth, william ellis fenn married ann elizabeth miles. in 1887, william miles fenn, married kate adcock. she was 21yrs, he was 23yrs. william was a brother of my ,now, renowned, elizabeth ann fenn. in the 1881 she is entered as elizabeth a m fenn. the m i think is for miles. was the miles name added to both children after the fenn/miles marriage above ? was he, or she widowed ?lots of Q,s, no answers.

Ed, You said, ''i,ve beeen looking through all three sites and am unable to find any entry for a couple of my verified ancestors'' and then further down you mention two marriages in 1868 and 1887, both of which are showing on the GRO indexes, so what is it you can't find? Merry

merry, that is a good question. i,m getting confused myself. i want to identify in census years, william ellis fenn and, ann elizabeth miles. probaly i will not be able to find out ann elizabeth miles was married more than once. was william miles fenn an issue from the miles/fenn marriage, or a child of ann elizabeth miles alone ?.

Well, this is the best fit for William Miles Fenn and Kate Adcock in 1891: William Fenn abt 1864 Yarmouth, Norfolk, England Head Gorleston Suffolk Kate Fenn abt 1866 Yarmouth, Norfolk, England Wife Gorleston Suffolk Frederick Fenn abt 1889 Gorleston, Suffolk, England Son Gorleston Suffolk Merry

And the same William Fenn in 1881: William Fenn abt 1864 Gt Yarmouth Boarder (Lodger) Worstead Norfolk (there were a lot of others in the house - all lodgers etc) Merry

But I can't find William b abt 1864 in the 1871 census (Under Miles or Fenn or any obvious mistranscriptions) You said: ''probaly i will not be able to find out ann elizabeth miles was married more than once'' If you mean was she Mrs Miles before she married Mr Fenn, rather than Miss Miles - surely the marriage certificate would help with that as it should state her Condition??
