Somewhere online I'm sure I've seen a list of parishes within cities etc. Can anyone tell me where this might be? (The 1841 census with all it's little parishes etc. is giving me a severe headache!! lol!) Bev x |

I can??? Can you point me in the right direction? What I mean is - I'm looking for rellies in St. Albans, but of course, St. Albans isn't listed because it's divided up into all St. Alban's parishes of which I haven't got a clue! Thanks Bev x |

This gives you registration districts - is it what you are looking for? http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/index.htm However, am not sure these apply to the 1841 - you might like to read the following which I found on Ancestry - and if you understand it perhaps you could let us all know what it means !!!! For the 1841 census parishes were organized into hundreds (and into wapentakes in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire) rather than registration districts as in the later censuses. The 1841 census returns were organized alphabetically according to county, hundred, and parish names. Consecutive piece numbers were assigned to hundreds or parts of hundreds for reference purposes. You will find the piece number on a paper strip on the side or bottom of every image, following the PRO class number (HO 107). There may be hundreds of pieces within a county. Pieces are comprised of books which in turn are comprised of enumeration districts. It is the book number, rather than the enumeration district number that is important to researchers for referencing. The book number is shown on the paper strip on the side or bottom of every image following the piece number. |

Bev, if you click on the census that you want to search, then under the search box their is a list of counties, click on the county you want, then click on th place you are looking for. here is an alternative, http://www.answers.*com/topic/list-of-civil-parishes-in-england remove * but remember county borders have moved over the years Roy |

Come on Bev - surely you know what a wapentake is - have just googled it for you A wapentake is a term derived from the Old Norse, the rough equivalent of an Anglo-Saxon hundred. The word denotes an administrative meeting place, typically a crossroads or a ford in a river where attendance or voting would be denoted or conducted by the show of weapons Better now !!!. |

Well thanks Elaine, I'll remember that...... lol!!!! ROY, YOU ARE BRILLIANT - that website is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. Ok, it's likely that the parishes of 150 years ago weren't quite as now, but hey, that site is a great help!!! At least now I can make an educated guess as to where to look. (I had exactly the same trouble with Bath too - and presumably all cities in 1841 are not entered on the census as cities, but rather as little unidentifiable pieces of cities!). Bev x |

Hi Roy, Thanks for that website - have added it to my bookmarks. I would think a wapentake is new to most of us so don´t worry yourself about it !!! |
