Have you noticed how some of the enumerators are very clearly men of little words - others must be the Norris Coles of the 19th century. I just found one employment description in Hackney 'Living off friends'. Now, is that just slightly disapproving?

Morning Heather. Don't know about enthusiatic, but I found a lazy one who noted my entire family by their initials. Very helpful.....not!!! At least he spelt their surname correctly.

Do you remember that real jobs worth of one who actually entered someones name as 'tramp by roadside'. Blimey, thats going beyond call of duty isnt it. You can just imagine Corries Norris doing this job.

I found a baptism in Parish records describing the child as' Bastard son of ....., an idler'. How cruel is that? especially as these records survive and we are looking at them 200 years later!!

Not an enthusiastic enumerator, but a 'Charming Clergy from Cheshire' post script added to baptism entry of Ellen Davies Birch, Heswall. 'Elizabeth Birch is now married to Thomas Davies, the 'reputed' father of this child.' Charming!! Exactly how many choices for father did the clergy think Elizabeth had? Perhaps it was a lucky dip!!! Hmmm, let he without sin...........!!!
