jayne- Im puzzled- from the information in this thread ,what reference are you going to follow.? The 2 that I supplied are the only ones that fit in a 10 year span with that marriage, and the 1901 family I found is the only family with a peter as father ,and mary as daughter for the right age in liverpol, and yet you do not specify which lead you are following. are you not convinced she was born in liverpool? |

Thankyou to everyone for helping me. This family has really given me a major headache. No ages seem to fit with any of them. From the information you have all supplied I should be able to get the right certificate. Thankyou |

Looks like this is the Mary from the 1891 family... Name: Mary Ann Cosgrove Year of Registration: 1883 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Prescot County: Lancashire Volume: 8b Page: 652 That makes it very hard to match her with the one you're looking for. Christine |

I've managed to find a similar family in 1891, but there are some odd discrepancies. They're in Widnes Cosgrove... Peter, Head, 40, general labourer, Ireland Elizabeth, wife, 30, Lancs, Rainhill Patrick L, son, 11, scholar, Widnes William, son 9, scholar, Widnes Mary A, dau, 7, scholar, Widnes Catherine, dau, 5, scholar, Widnes John, son, 3, Widnes Otherwise, I haven't managed to find a Head=Peter with daughter = Mary of the right sort of age. The family must be mistranscribed in 1891 - I've tried quite a lot of ruses without being able to find them. Will go and have another look. Christine |

if she was born in liverpool, she was born in liverpool- i wouldnt get hung up about the middle name -it might have been a confirmation name or adopted later. |

Yes, that ''21 years old'' could just be a convenient way of avoiding getting parental consent. How far later have you looked? Have you tried the Local BMD site, in case that was one of the records which escaped the transcription into the GRO record? Christine |

If you have found Mary Ellen on the census, does she have any siblings? Are they all born in the same place? Can you find any of their births? If you can't find Mary Ellen to start with, look for the siblings, note their registration district, then look at all the Cosgroves in that district. She may have been Mary, or Elinor, or Ellen Mary at birth. If all else fails, get a certificate for a sibling. |

I am trying to find the birth of my great grandma. On her marriage certificate it says her name is Mary Ellen Cosgrove and her fathers name is Peter Cosgrove, she is twenty one years old and was married in June 1905. I have looked on the census and found that she was born in Liverpool. A few weeks ago I found a Mary Ellen Cosgrove on the births (but born in Manchester) knowing how people were not completely honest in those days I sent for the certificate anyway but it was the wrong one. I have again searched the births a few years either side of 1885 and still I cant find anything. Has anyone any suggestions? I am going to work soon but will be back on here as soon as I get back. Thankyou Jayne |
