I have copied a family tree programme onto a CD plus all entered information so that I can use on a different computer. When I go to use the CD on the different computer it tells me that I have not got permissions to open the files - stumped. Lin |

Oh gawd. I feel for you, but have no advice. Perhaps a IT whiz kid will come along soon. |

Linda When I got new PC I downloaded PAF again via the LDS site. I then made Gedcoms of the trees on my old PC and emailed them to the new one When I clicked the emails, PC asked if I wanted to open them with PAF, and everything was fine. Sorry I can't help Lin, unless making a Gedcom is possible with your old software? |

I think you may need to download the PAF programme to open it, see LDS site for instructions. Liz |

Hi Lin In agreement with Liz, it may be necessary to download the relevant software to your new computer first. As you have all the information on cd and are trying to open it on another computer, the computer may not be able to open it because it does not have the relevant program. You would have to install the family tree program on the new computer first....once the family tree program is installed you will hopefully then be able to open the files from the cd and copy them onto the new computer. Lynne x (not a whizz kid but hope it helps!) |

This is what I did - I went onto my computer at home and entered more info onto the programme then saved as normal to hard drive then CD. Went onto another computer this morning - The programme is already on it's hard drive and tried to open CD but it says 'Micosoft Jet database Engine cannot open the file E:/name.fdb - it is already open exclusively by another user (which is my home computer) - you need permission'. Lin Make sure you have the correct software on the second computer. I sometimes use either computer for mine. You can either save to a disc or sometimes I email a file to myself and then open it on the other computer. Perhaps you havent saved the file to disc properly? Margaret |

This is what I am trying to find out - not being computer minded :( It's the permission on the error message - how do I give permission whatever that is. Lin |

If you think the PAF programme is there, I'd unistall it then re-install the programme. When I changed over to my new pc, all I did was download the programme again from LDS and it worked ok. It might not have installed correctly. Fingers crossed Liz |

I see you say you copied a family tree program onto a CD. Was it one you had bought and loaded onto the other computer. If so you will need to load it onto the new computer from the original disc rather than copy it I think. If it was a program you downloaded from the internet then, as the others have said, you probably need to download again. In either case you should save the information you had entered as a data file (Gedcom or whatever format the prog you use supports) rather than try to save the program and information together. |

If you are still stuck, see if 'Judy in the States' can help you. Just do a search on this board for her name. She's a computer whizz and has helped me a lot. Hope you get it sorted. Must be sooo frustrating! You have my sympathies. |
