Can anyone tell me please why a couple of death references that I've found should be for the wrong area. I am looking for a death in Nottingham or Basford (also Notts). These should both be 7b references. I have just found one in 1946 and one in 1947 that both say 3c. Can anyone explain why this might be please? Chrissie |

Unless it is a subdistrict,or the death occured slightly out of area. Deaths are always registered where they occur, not where the person usually resided. Glen |

Is it possible that different areas of Nottingham were using different registers? Just a thought. |

Hi Chrissie - maybe the district ref changed. I know most of my Devon ones are 5b but I've got a few that are 7a. Someone on here told me that they'd changed the numbers at some point... can't remember when... sarah :-) |

Thanks for the replies Glen and Angela. No, Nottingham and Basford have always been 7b and I have found other Nottingham and Basford results on the same page as 7b. It just seemed odd that 2 so close should both be wrong. Chrissie |

Thanks Sarah but as you will see above, I have found others on the same page as 7b. Chrissie |

From Genuki, district numbers changed after 1946. Taken from the Nottinghamshire page. Glen |

Do you mean that the deaths you have found in 1946 and 1947 WERE registered in Nottingham or Basford with the wrong volume number, or that you have found a death with the right name but in wrong district? If it's just the vol. number that is wrong, is the entry above for vol. 3c, and the transcriber has just made a mistake? Kath. x |

Thanks Karen. No Kathleen. I meant that they were in Nottingham as expected but were not the ref expected. I'm wondering now though whether the ref changed from June 1946 (when I have found a 7b) and July (when it says 3c). Chrissie |

The GRO registration districts system was changed in 1852, further in 1946, and again in 1974. Nottinghamshire which had been 7b until 1946 became 3c. All information on registrations districts now and past can be seen on 1837online - Resources and guidance. |
