Right, on census, Jane Pope is my gran.(almost 100%) sure. Thomas Pope is her father. Mother died1878 aged 22. Her name Jane Pope nee Newsham. I have never found a birth cert for either parent or marriage cert. If Jane is neice of Jane Giles, why is Thomas Not brother inlaw? Hes marked as a lodger. His wife cant be her sister as both called Jane. she cant have been deceased Mr, Giles` sister as wrong surname. Next : I got Thomas` death cert today. He died 1886 age 34 Brentford. Informant brother H.G Pope living Brentford. I can find no trace of H G and Thomas together.as children. should be on 1861 at least. HELP before I go mad. Thank you Sylvia.

Thomas Pope- do you know if he was born brentford? If so what part of london are we talking-not up on all these south east locations. Btw....its probable that HG is one of the older if not oldest brothers, and even if there was 10 years gap-it isnt a surprise to not see them together as the way the censi fall for thomas 1851-thomas not born yet 1861-thomas would be 8,HG could be 18+and away from home by then

I really have no idea where he was born Alter. He seems to have spent all his working life on barges in Brentford. This is in West London, on the River Thames. I have also never discovered where his wife came from. This must be why I never get hot matches at all. No rellies in the world!

From what Sylvia has said I think my 1871 one is right.

Oh you lovely people, you are all so clever. I must learn to think outside the box. My Jane Pope was born 4/7/74. So I have been trawling for marriages prior to that! never thought to look later. Now I can get certs and find who their fathers were. Many, many thanks. I hope I can repay one day when I improve at it. Sylvia.

Now then, this is my old neck of the woods. I feel pretty certain that these were houseboats moored in the stretch of river between Kew Bridge and Barnes Railway Bridge. Although within the borough of Brentford and Chiswick it's actually called Strand-on-the Green and is in my opinion the very best place for a summer evening pub-crawl. Along that stretch of the Thames are some of the oldest and most characterful pubs you'll ever find and there are still houseboats moored there now. Oh, how I wish I was back there now. A little piece of heaven in West London.

Hello Paul, missed your message last night as I had to sign off early to watch football. You are right about Strand on the Green. It was where most of them lived. Its very strange how things change. My ancestors were dirt poor living there, grubbing about on barges to make a living. Nowadays, you have to be a millionaire to live in that area. It is still lovely there, I live just up the road in Hammersmith, also on the river. Sylvia.
