Have you tried contacting the Family Records Centre either at Kew or Mydleton Street. They apparently have lists of people who are lost at sea - maybe worth while giving them a call or emailing them, they usually respond quite quickly. Jenny |

Thanks for all your replies. I know the exact date and location etc. of my g.gran's brother death at sea, he's not the problem only that I can't find a record of a death certificate and wondered if this was normal for someone lost at sea. I just wondered if my g.gran's first husband also died at sea and perhaps that is why I can't find a death certificate for him, however, I can't find him on any of the lists of fishermen/trawlermen who died at sea. It is slightly complicated in that I don't want to use any names because one contact I have is related to my g.gran's first family and I know she doesn't like to share her family info with people she has not checked out, which is fine. The problem is I can't find any details of my g.gran's 2nd marriage which I need to trace my g.grandad's background and I thought it might help if I knew when her first husband died. I know all about my g.gran and her parents, etc. which is when I found out she had had 2 husbands and my contact confirmed this because, as I say she is descended from the first family. I've tried all sites mentioned by you all, so I am stuck now. I can't find either a birth, marriage or death for my gt.grandfather. All I know is that he was still alive in 1928 as he is the person who notified my g.gran's death. I know the address in Hull where they were living at the time, which is where they seemed to have lived for quite a few years. I think I'll have to take a trip to E.Yorks to see if there are any clues up there. |

I'm not sure that there is a death cert unless there is an identified body. I think you were reported lost at sea/missing and then there was a time limit before you could be assumed to be dead (7 years?) Possibly the widow got some sort of assistance, which she would have lost had she actually remarried after the time period? How much later on did you look for a marriage? Jay |

When looking through the burial records for Lymne and Hythe in Kent there are quite a few burials of unidentified bodies from shipwrecks on the Goodwin Sands. If they were UK citizens I don't know how their deaths would be recorded unless they had property and were declared legally dead by a Coroner? |

Does anyone know where deaths at sea (eg trawlermen) would be registered. I know my g.gran's brother died at sea and got all his details from a list compiled by a man in Hull, but I cannot find anything on BMD or Ancestry. I have his full name and the date, (Feb 1906) name of trawler and how he died, but nothing shows up on the normal records. I'm interested because his dad was also a trawlerman and just seems to have vanished into thin air and a few years later his widow(?) my g.gran took up with another man and produced my gran. I cannot find their marriage anwhere. I can see that for census purposes they would say they were husband and wife, but when she died in 1928, he still put himself down as husband, so I guess they did marry. Any ideas anyone? I've searched IGI, FreeBMD and Ancestry. |
