'Today we have published more than 1.3 million parish records for Westminster on findmypast.co.uk

The records cover the vast period 1538-1945, making them a historical goldmine for those with London ancestors. We have made these records available online for the first time.

More than 50 Westminster churches are included in the records published today, including St Anne, Soho, St Clement Danes, St George Hanover Square, St James Westminster, St Margaret Westminster, St Martin-in-the-Fields, St Mary-le-Strand and St Paul Covent Garden.

This exciting launch sees the first release of the parish records in findmypast.co.uk's Westminster Collection. The remaining parish records will go live in the coming months, along with cemetery registers, wills, rate books, settlement examinations, workhouse admission and discharge books, bastardy, orphan and apprentice records, charity documents, and militia and watch records.

I do not 'keep posting" as you suggest. In fact I think the last time was for Watermen and Lightermen records, another area in which I have a particular interest and I know so do others on here.

I never knew GR could be so much fun.

Seems to me that every genealogy site has a little something that the others don't have. Justifying their existence I suppose. Keep the cash rolling in.

When you get used to this site, you will notice that members quite often post threads about new additions to various genealogy sites.


In fact, elsewhere on this page, is a thread advising us that a helpful Scottish site has returned.


It's called........helping each other.

I'm glad that FMP have that information,but annoyed with Ancestry at the same time.
I have a top notch membership for Ancestry,I had have it to progress with people who emigrated.So can't afford FMP as well.
Ancestry don't have the marriage record I want but FMP do!

So now I don't know whether or not to buy the cert from GRO or pay for 90 days on FMP

Having followed up on the "Taking Scot "link mentioned on this thread,registered and browsed.
I find that FMP have also released Merchant seaman records.

i can't wait until my sub for Ancestry runs out in August!

We have just published 1 million 20th century Merchant Navy Seamen records on findmypast.co.uk

This is the first time ever that these records have been made available online and we are working in association with The National Archives to give you access to your merchant navy ancestors.

Silly question, I expect , are these records showing actual images ?

Don't seem any different to records found elsewhere as far as I can tell.

I gather that someone has discovered the "Westminster records" are

I think it is just that the records are being released in stages. The original request on the thread regarding the freebmd didn't state which record collection the info had come from (I note that the Cowlishaw thread produced info from Boyds marriage index). The coverage of the Westminster archives is going to be patchy - St Margarets will cover marriages from the 1500s to 1945, but I struggling to find any actually available yet (the pdf that Chris posted - thanks, Chris, I'm glad you posted - does not include St Margarets), whereas St Geo Hanover Sq will only be from 1905 to 1945. I did find a Pimlico marriage from the new Westminster collection, but it was a transcript not the image, and the only info added to the basic "freebmd" info was the ages of the spouses and the exact date of the marriage - so no info on occupations, addresses, parents or witnesses. However, that is only one example and there are going to be all types of records eventually becoming available. I wonder if this is an indication that the local archive centre will shut under the current austerity drive?

I can't say I am over excited by this.

So why arn't the records also available on GR?

I have several surnames that I am researching around the late 1700s and so far I have found one additional Marriage in 1797 (also on Pallott's) and one Baptism (Mistranscribed).
When it comes to the Marriages, I would really like images so I can check signatures and Witnesses but I am betting that the minimum is shown.

I do not have a FMP subscription and on this evidence I do not think it would be worth it. Perhaps it may in a few years time

I don't have a problem with you letting us know when new records are released by any website, Chris.

I have a subscription to Findmypast but don't always notice when new records are released so it's always good to have someone let us know.

There is also no point in getting upset because the particular site you happen to have a subscription for doesn't have every record under the sun. Different sites will always have different records. That is the beauty of GenesReunited and these community boards - we can all help each other. I'm not too proud to ask for a look-up on a site I don't have a subscription for and I'm quite willing to look up things on the site I do subscribe to.

In this instance Rollo - I think you are wrong.
