I knoe anything was possible in days gone by as education isnt like today but how can someone vanish in to thin air!

I have a member of my distant family that is on the 61, 71 and 81 census but has disappeared by 91 or 01 for that matter. Nor can i find any marriage or death records for him. I would assume hes died but how can i verify this?

also 'does british subject' mean born to english parents abroad?

It is very easy to vanish into thin air - an awful lot of people manage it nowadays, and definitely did so in the past when there were far less checks on records.

Have you looked to see if they emigrated?

where have you looked for their marriage/death/

british subject would indicate that born abroad at least one of their parents would have been British, usually Dad

I have looked on free bmd and ancestry (im only on 2 week free trial so not sure if its limited)

His name is David Merritt born in Beverley-yorkshire (east) in 1855 to parents Henry and Mary. I have him on the 61-81 census'. In 81 he was living with mum as dad had died and she had remarried a george dunn. The 3 of them in 72 toll gavel i think

btw-the british subject question was relating to a dfferent relie that i know nothing about her early life only from marriage!

yeah! Most of them took it from my tree!
one or two people are decendantd of his brother thomas but no-one seems to know anything! LOL!

Looby could he have adopted his new stepfather's surname?

i suppose he could-i will have a look and see if i can see him.

janet-this is him without a doubt! I googled and purchased a day pass for news archives. There is another article about david merritt absconding his duties to messrs crosskill and sons-which is part of his family. he worked as an iron turner for them-they are a really well known family in these parts are the crosskills for iron mongery.
