I am wondering if anyone can advise me on how I can start tracing ancestors who were born overseas, specifically initially, Germany. Thanks

And what's that translation thing with the funny name.

If you put the German words in it gives you an English translation.

I keep thinking of something to do with "fish" Nope will go take a look.

Well at least I was on the right track. Babel Fish. There are other translators available but that is the one I used.

The English translation can sometimes be a bit confused, just be aware of that.

No No No don't use babel fish, in fact, sorry to say but those on-line translators are a load of old twaddle, they really are. I wouldn't advise anyone to use them.
They might be alright for one word, ie the translation of, say, bachelor, baptism, farmer, that kind of thing, but for anything else - forget it.

Thanks KarenitD, You are correct. I was tidying up my computer files last night and found some info I had kept about babel fish. It says exactly what you have said.

Here is the information and I do apologise because I have quite forgotten who actually sent it to me.

Babel Fish, and other on-line translation services, are useless!! Unfortunately, they translate word by word, and thereby lose the context of the sentence.

Example - translating the sentence "Harry Smith the fishmonger, lived right on the edge of a small hamlet next to the woods", is likely to translate as something like.... "Harry Smith among fish lived correctly at perimeter of piece of ham made of wood nearby".

I speak Italian, not as well as I used to, but well enough to know that the on-line translations make absolutely no sense! I've tested them!!

As for finding genealogy sites for foreign countries, well there are plenty - and in English.
Try genealogylinks.net and Cyndislist.com for starters!!!'

Was it you??!! Must have been about two or three years ago when I was researching my German grandmother. IThe info is now stored in my "Hints For" folder but I won't forget it now.
