Found this man on the CWGC site. He may be my grandfather, but no details of next of kin are given.

Does anyone know, please, of anywhere else online I can look to find further information? Thank you.

He was born 22 May 1910 in Bolton. Parents: Abraham & Hannah. Wife: Hilda.

Unfortunately, James Crompton is such a common name and I'm not even sure which service he was in and there is no one left to ask.

To answer your question re comparision between Roll of Honour and CWGC - I have found that they sometimes give different info, ie the Roll of Honour gives place of birth, CWGC does not; CWGC sometimes gives age and parents' and/or wife's name and address.

With a common name, using both can be useful: Roll of Honour for POB then check dates of death and service nos on CWGC.

Presumably, you have been told that your grandfather died during WW2?

Do you know Hilda's maiden name?

The fact that he was 'never mentioned' would seem to me to suggest something less honourable than a death in war. If he'd died serving his country, one would expect his memory to have been kept alive.

Did Hilda marry more than once?

I asked about her maiden name as I was intending to try to see when the last child of the marriage was registered.........as a dateline for searching for info about her husband

The point of this thread is to ascertain what 'War Dead' records are available online, not to cast aspersions on my family.

And for your information, the fact that he was 'never mentioned' is far more likely to be because, as children, we were just not interested enough to ask!!!!
