Hi, having found the family on the 1901 cenus, i went on to look for them on the 1891 cenus but to no avail and was wondering if another pair of eyes would help!

The family is of James Liddle born 1862 Durham and Mary Liddle born 1863 Durham. They were living in Lachester in 1901.

Yes, that is the family on the 1901 Census :)

one almost wants to weep!


I can't find any sign of the Liddles before 1901, not at least with any certainty.

I have found a marriage registration which MAY be correct

Marriages Mar 1880 (>99%)

In desperation, I looked at the Public Family Trees on ancestry to see if I could get a clue ........... I'm thinking in terms of a terrible mis-transcription or even a listing under the wrong surname.

One tree has 5 attached records, 6 sources, umpteen photos ............... parents James and Mary Jane, all the children shown on the 1901 Census


BUT then you get into looking more deeply.


1891 ............ she/he has James living at home with mother and unmarried .......... mother called Mary aged 70. All quite correct, there is a census entry .............. BUT not your James

1881 .............. s/he has James living with inlaws ......... but his wife is called Elizabeth!

She has wife's name as Mary Jane Salkeld ........ but no note of when they might have married!

none of the children's records show them being found in 1891



I do hope no-one copies that tree!!!!!




Meanwhile ............ I think the Liddle family have taken off in that alien spaceship!!!


The one that deposited my gt x ??? grandfather in Buckinghamshire in 1720
