Herefordshire actually - sorry!!!

Much Marcle is a small village and civil parish in the English county of Herefordshire, located at grid reference SO658327 between Ross-on-Wye and Ledbury.

Much Marcle is home to the 13th century Church of England parish church of St Bartholomew[1] with historic carvings and a very ancient 'hollow' yew tree.[2] The church contains the tomb of Blanche Mortimer, of the dynasty of Marcher Lords, the Mortimers; the tomb bears the Mortimer arms. She married Peter de Grandison.

Hellens Manor,[3] which sits in the heart of Much Marcle, is a monument to much of England’s history since 1096 when the manor was granted to the Norman de Balun family, who were to witness the signing of the Magna Carta. It contains a wealth of period furnishings, paintings and decorations, as well as a budding Tudor garden. The Manor plays a strong role in the community - it is open to the public and provides a venue for educational, musical and literary events the year round. The other principal seat is Homme House, surrounded by ancient parkland. There are also two ruined medieval castles in the parish, one is Mortimer's Castle, also known as Much Marcle Castle.


Sadly the place where mass murderer Fred West hails from!!!

Villages. Rushall,Little Marcle,Trumpet,Preston Cross,Dymock,Yatton,

The nearest town to Putley is Ledbury. Probably about 4 miles

Also Little Marcle is closer to Putley than Much Marcle

The villages on the Hereford side of Woolhope are Fiddlers Green,Mordiford,Fownhope,Sollershope.

Towns. Ledbury.Hereford,Ross on Wye and Gloucester.

I have even comissioned someone form the Herefordshire records office to search for these people, but he only found Thomas's 2 marriages, and he suggested I tried Gloucestershire.

Shows that Genes is the best for researching :-)

Tried it, nothing, it only shows main areas, not smaller ones, which I am assuming would be closer to Much Marcle, etc.

I have had a look at Wikipedia, this has been a little more helpful, but I really need someone who knows the area well and can say x, y & z are near, try them.

well my first port of call would be 'Google maps'

Does anyone have any knowledge of this area? A bit of background:-

I have a Thomas Coldrick/Colerick marrying a Hannah Saul in Much Marcle, Herefordshire in 1828.

Thomas was previously married to Jane Gwatkin in Woolhope.

There are no burials for either Thomas or his 1st wife in Woolhope, but there is for Putley, which is on the northern border of Woolhope.

There isn't any baptism records for Herefordshire for Jane, Thomas or his 2nd wife Hannah, so I am branching out in my search to include Gloucestershire.

I would like to know what villages, towns, etc, bordered close to Woolhope, Putley, Much Marcle.
