I hope someone can help me please, my nephe has asked me to help find his fathers birth family, and I have absolutely no idea where to start, I have his mothers birth name and the address she was living at in Kensington when David was born, there may be an older sister possibly called Mary who was taken to live with her grandparents in Ireland, |

I don't know a lot about adoptions but if your nephew is over 18 then he is entitled to see his adoption files. I think he should get in touch with social services and see if they can help. |

Has he got his father's original birth cert? I'm assuming so from what you say. In that case, is there a father's name on it? |

Susan, was his dad formally adopted, or simply brought up by another couple as their own? What sort of year are we talking about for his dad's birth? Like Jan, happy to help (Jan, I got absolutely soaked last weekend on the campsite at Wythall). |

His dad was formaslly adopted I believe via the catholic church, apparently his birth Mother was Catholic and I do kno that his adopted mother is catholic, he was also adpopted in Sheffield ( I have just found that out), and he was raised in Leeds. He was formally adopted in March 1968.. |

Sorry, I misread you post. I thought it was your nephew who was adopted rather than his dad. If his dad is dead then I don't think anyone else can access the adoption files. |

I did wonder about that Kath. Seems daft though, if the person isn't living. What harm can it do? |

Madmeg, didn't know there was a campsite at Wythall - what on earth were you doing there! Are you sure I'm the Jan you want?? Maybe the B'ham connection? |

The Freedom of Information Act doesnt apply in these cases,,,,and it seems that the nephews late father has prior to his death applied and got all his birth pre-adoption information, |

Well the father obviuosly knew about David as he walked out on them both for what reason known only unto them, as to the damage I cannot see what damage could possibly be done now a you all said David had managed to find a lot out before he died, unfortunately due to injuries he recieved before he died he could not carry on his search. |

There will be a hearing in the High Courts of Justice on May 21st regarding the access of details of birth parents when an adopted child has died. A lady by the name of Frances Lake has set up the Descendents of Deceased Adopted Persons Group (DAP) and is fighting for the rights of those of us whose parents have died but were adopted. I, for one, want a positive outcome on this. |
