Metropolitan Police records appear to be at the National Archives. If you go to the National Archives site and do a search for Police the details will be amongst the results. |

Valerie, you should be working backwards. Do you have your GGF's marriage certificate which would give his fathers name and occupation plus his wifes details and their place of residence? |

Hello again everyone I have now recieved the information regarding my grt grandfathers police service record, which confirms that the birth cert I have is the correct one. I am still missing the information I need to obtain a marriage cert for his parents. On his birth cert 1st Dec 1859 his mothers name is given as Jane Hannah Caroline Brown formely Gibson, and his fathers name as Thomas Brown his occupation was shopman I have trawled through loads of list looking for them but have come up empty handed. I've no idea what year they would have married if at all, and so once again I'm asking for any ideas where to look next. I have an 1861 census with Jane and Robert on but no Thomas. Thank you all for the help you've given me,now can I please ask you if you can help even more in my quest for the elusive marriage certificate. |

Hi Quinsgran - I'll have a look at this Jane, but the only problem is that she's given as a widow in 1881 and when Robert Brown got married in 1884 he gives his fathers name as Thomas Brown, I have been assuming that because his fathers name was on the cert' that he was still alive in 1884, am I wrong in thinking that.If so I've been on the wrong track for ages. |

Who are the witnesses on Robert's marriage certificate? Could they be relatives? |

Brown is a very common name. I know because I have Brown in my tree. |
