Could anyone tell me if for example you are looking for a birth
Can you actually view the origanal parish record containing the birth parents names or can this only be done by purchasing a certificate

There are two documents that you are looking at here.

Records Offices have Parish Registers containing (amongst othe records) Baptisms which give parents' names (but not usually mothers' maiden names). You can view these at no cost and get a copy for a small sum. (ours cost 70p each).

Birth certificates have to be applied for and they cost £7 each. These usually give mothers' maiden names, fathers' names, occupation of father and address of birth. Much more informative. They start from July 1837.

I always send for birth/marriage and death certificates from the General Register Office in Southport (online)

I have seen companies charge more for the same document but never seen them cheaper!

Yes, I order all my BMD certs on line from the GRO. Brilliant service.

I gave up with our local Register Office; they don't have the time, they say, and they don't do marriages unless you can tell them which church!

Jill - if the parish you are looking for is in London, there are a lot of these online on Ancestry now.

Just thought I'd mention it just in case.

No the record i was seeking was from lapworth warwickshire unfortunatley these records have moved around from stratford to solihull I phoned these places and couldntdt get an awnser on wether they had the records so was advised to go to the main one as i cant get there due to ill health i was asking on another board if anyone was going could they do a look up know i no what i should be asking for thanks for all your help on this board

I have seen your message on the "records office" I assume you have all the details of the birth of Harry Poole ie 1860 Solihull 6D 460 AMJ so you can send for the certiicate from the GRO on line cost £7.00 You will then get his father's name & occupation plus his mother's maiden name

But Jill you could probably also order it from the Solihull office (or whichever office has them for that area), and specify lots of criteria and if it is the wrong one they don't charge you at all. I ordered a marriage cert from Macclesfield on Thursday (well, posted on Thursday), with a long story about how I wasn't certain it was right cos the mothers maiden name was Henshall and the register entry said Henshaw. I wondered if the two names were interchangeable. The wonderful registrar looked up all the births of the children to this couple and told me that half said mmn Henshall, and the other half Henshaw, so that told me the marriage was 99.99% right. She will charge me the full £7 for the marriage cert, but has done about 2 hours work to inform me of the situation, and if I had thought it as wrong it would have cost me nothing. The certificate will be here tomorrow - 4 working days from posting the request by snail mail.

According to the National Archives Access to Archives search engine, the parish records for Lapworth are held at the Warwickshire County record office.

If it is a simple search, i.e. you know dates etc then they may do this for free, some records offices do, others charge. Worth asking them.

Well after alot of humming and arring about this one i finally kept fingers crossed and used the online GRO on here and to my surprise within 3 days i had the certificate for henry poole my great grandfather I was correct in my findings father john poole and mother eliza truman formaly harris asuming from that she was also married twice i was so pleased with myself i couldnt stop laughing all day thanks again to all that helped with this one i know its been a while but thanks again

Glad you got the right certificate.

I got a marriage cert from 1861 this week that proved a long term mystery; it quite makes your day, doesn't it?
