thanks for all your information,i'm getting more and more confused... cecila married the mullen guy,think i'll send off for isabella's death certificate next as i have james death certificate and person present at death was a cecila mullen so we have a right one there but!! and a big but is the marriage certificate i have of james pochi and isabella coughlan it has his dad's name as stephen???but to me this is'nt a very italian sounding name.....i thought it would'nt be so hard with it being a unusual surname but noe so!!!aaaaaaarrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh!! :-( |

Lawrence isn't a new name. He is on the 1881 census as Cecelia's brother. |

thanks that probably the explanation on the different spellings....i think i have there marriage certificate but not quite sure now....it does have them just putting a x mark next to the signature..but the cofusing thing about that is it looks like he's down as a hawker?whatever that is.....it does'nt have his place of birth so not quite sure its the right people...thanks for all your information nicola. |

Not many people could read and write in those days, so it depended on how the person writing the name down thought it should be spelt by the way it was said. If the people giving the name couldn't read then they couldn't check that the name had been spelt wrongly. That's why a lot of names change slightly over the years. |

i wonder why so many different spellings???wish i had'nt started this as i don't seem to be getting anywhere with it,i have james death certificate and he died in 43 little lever street in 1890 he was down as a master tailor....... |
