Maybe his birth year is one year out on death cert. You really need his marriage cert to be sure you have the correct family. |

If you get the 1916 marriage certificate, Margaret, it will give his father's name and occupation. Hopefully you'll be able to match him up with a Herbert on the census that way. |

Thank you all for your input. You are all fantastic. Now,how do I find out if this Herbert Barber was the same one as the one who married Harriett Long in 1916? |

Have you tried the Lancashire BMD site, Margaret? It's not completely done yet but he might be on there. |

I've recently been trying to trace my family tree, but keep stalling on my maternal grandfather, Herbert Barber, who was 81 when he died around 1970, and lived in Ashton under Lyne, Lancs. My mum, who is still alive says he was born in Ashton, Her brother who died recently had his certificates, but his wife says she can't find them. I have found his marriage record to Harriett Long of Holmfirth in Oldham, in 1916, but have been stymied in my attempts to find a date of birth, death etc. He was a butcher when my mum was born, and she swears blind that he was always a butcher, and was the son of a butcher, all in Ashton, but the Census doesn't reveal anything in 1901, and I can't get anything after that, and there doesn't seem be any way of getting into another one after this date. |
