Hit a brick wall-Alexander born 19th Feb 1858-cannot go anyfurhter with his parents as have no year when born or any idea where they lived-Milne side of family more interested in, but not got very far.

Have you got Alexander in the 1861 census? Theoretically he should be with his parents and hopefully they gave details of birthplaces and ages accurately.

There are 15 showing up on 1861, all in Scotland. Are his parents William and Margaret? If so this could be him;

Looks like you'll be needing Scotlands People. Registration in Scotland started in 1858 and this is the golden year. A birth from 1858 gives shed loads of info that subsequent ones don't. However, Scots birth entries will give you the date of parents marriage, location of marriage and time of birth.

Apologies, 1855 was when statutory registration started.

There is an Alexander Milns on the 1871 census in Derbyshire.

If this is the correct one, could be one of mine.

Also looking at the age of Helen, must be an aunt.
