Since civil registration began in 1837, all births have to be registered within 6 weeks (42 days). There is a fine for late registration. Until 1875, it was the responsibility of the Registrar (not the parents) to ensure all births were registered. In 1875 the law changed and the responsibility to register a birth now fell on the parents. |

Is this Scotland? When was the registration of births made compulsory? I know in England it's 1875 ish but is it later in Scotland maybe? |
