The name Minnie was originally a nickname for the names Mary and Wilhelmina.[1] Minnie may also be used as a nickname for any name that contains the sound "min."[2] It was used as an independant name beginning in the 1870s.[3]
The name Mary is of Latin origin, and the meaning is ambiguous. One of the commonly accepted meanings, however, is "star of the sea."[4] Wilhelmina is a German name, related to William, and means "desired protection,"[5] or "will helmet."[6]

It came into use as a pet name (earliest in Scotland, then generally) for Mary, Margery, Margaret, anything beginning with M, frequently as a baby attempt at any name of the Emily, Amy, Amelia, Emma complex, for the rare Wilhelmina, or, like 'Dolly' or 'Sissy', just as a name for a little girl, regardless of her registered forename. It was a Scots pet name for adult females, from husband to wife, too. 'Ma Minnie' (c.f. 'Ma Jo' (for sweetheart) Once it was heard around, some mothers adopted it as a proper name and many children were registered that way from the late C19. The later the birth date of the child, the more likely it is to be 'standalone'.

Wow, thank-you, I didnt realise the name covered so many areas! finding great great granddad William Murrells marriage to a woman known as minnie somewhere in the south of England between 1907 and 1910 is not going to be an easy task!.... this isnt aided by the fact that their son is on the 1911 census... as nurse child to a goddard family... apparently his mother (my great great granny had been a naughty girl)!! Although evidently a few years later his grandfather "snatched" him from the nurse families garden, how much truth is in this I dont know.. but all very interesting lol
looks like its his birth cert on order tonight then!
Cheers again

The son Harold Austin Murrell was born Reading in 1907 (3rd quater), we have no idea what his mothers name was other than she was known as Minnie. My nan is pretty sure the father was william murrell, but has no idea where he came from. I wondered whether "minnie" was sent on an extended holiday to Berkshire or whether she was from that area. By all accounts they did get married in the end and went on to have a daughter Molly and a son called Jack (well this is what they were known as, again not sure if this is given name or known as), however I am not totally sure on dates of birth roughly around 1909 onwards I would think.
So any points on where to look would be great,
re : birth cert, would I get the mother and fathers names on one?
cheers again

Crikey that is some big age gap then!! ... John not Jack .. didnt think of that well done :) looks like Horsham is the starting block for the family then... many thanks.. what has been a brick wall for ages looks to be slowly clearling.. isnt it amazing what one little comment to a grandparent can unravel!
thankyou peeps.. off to do some digging!! ...
