One can buy a copy of the m.cert from the GRO. It's cheaper if you can provide the reference for it, so they only have to access the appropriate volume for that quarter, and can go straight to the page. By this date, there are two marriages per page, so you get 4 names (click on the page # in the FreeBMD hit), and typically, might have doubts about who married whom. FreeBMD is an ongoing transcription of the GRO index, currently pretty much done thru the 1920s.

However, the GRO isn't the only place you can buy the cert - one can also buy the cert from the local register office where the event was rego'd (or wherever they've relocated to now). The Co Durham ROs all have at least some of their local indices online, and the indices aren't the same. In particular, the local indices typically only have year, not quarter, and typically index marriages by the church + entry #. In this case:

For Durham/Auckland stuff one can enter "church register" in the local search box at top left, and see a list of codes for churches. Here, DCREG refers to a register office marriage, or a marr the register attended. Before 1898, the registrar attended all non Cof E marrs, except for jews and quakers. After 1898, most non-conformist ministers were authorized to oversee the signing of the registers. The main exception to this was RCs, so your guys could have either married in a RO, or in an RC church.

Not really - I just checked the 1901 census and searched on FreeBMD. There is a marriage on the site for Lily in 1911 in the Reg District and others of the family from the 1901 Census. Just search on the surname Barrow for the Reg District of Durham between 1901 and 1920 and I think you will find most of them. Ask if you have a problem. www.freebmd.org.uk

To check which person they married (usually a choice of two) search for births with the father's surname and the mother's maiden name but don't put in a christian name, You are lucky that Barrow is not that usual

Were the family living in Coxhoe in 1901? If they were this is a possible marraige from FreeBMD which covers the area. (You can click on the Reg District of Durham and it lists the settlements it covers)

It is too late to check the couple in the census but it is possible to check for possible children to see if either maiden name matches for children born post 1911

A lot depends on the name and the area you are researching. Commoner names such as Smith or Kelly in urban areas can be be very difficult.

You can do a search over a number of years on FreeBMD and check the census it see if a likely partner looks like the right person.

All i have is date of birth,do you just guess roughly what year they may have married?Thats if they did?and did they live that long?

Please can someone tell me how to start the search for possible marriges? thats if they did get married..I am a bit stuck really.I know a couple of them as word has been passed down through the family..I would love to know what happened to them.
