Is there a protocol or accepted way of recording places of birth when a places changes from one county to another.

I have a number of ancestors who are recorded on census returns and in parish records as being born in one county but when I then google said place it show up as being in different neighbouring county.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

I have quite a few rellies that were born in Kent or Surrey, for example, and the places later became London, so I save the address like this example - Lambeth, Surrey / London, England

The location at the time of the birth is the relevant info.

I have a relation who was born in Warrington, Lancs...the fact that Warrington is now in Cheshire does not alter the fact that my relation was a Lancastrian by birth

Many thanks for your responses. Leading on from this - when looking for parish records do you look in the county of birth or the county that the parish is in now.

I disagree with Eric. The current location of the record depends on where the event's site is currently located.
E.g., I would expect Gravesend records of whatever period to be in the London archives, not Kent's. Similarly, I'd expect to find Chorlton records at Manchester, not Preston, Holy Island records are at Northumberland Collections, not Durham's etc. However, some records are parts of larger collections, and they might be with the bulk of the collection: e.g., the bishops' transcripts for Holy Island are at Durham.

I didn't think the question was about where the records are currently held..........rather under which county they would be recorded.

mgnv - London archives (LMA) hold the records for the old County of London - basically central London (with the exception of Westminster which holds it's own) along with those for Middlesex. I would expect to find Gravesend records in the Kent archives.

Eric & RobG - Ok, I stuffed up there then.

My dad's uncle was born in a parish (Old Deer) which was 90% in Aberdeenshire, but, unlike his siblings, he was born in the 10% which was in Banffshire. I record his birth in Banffshire, even though a few years later the boundary was redrawn, and the whole of this anomolous chunk of BAN was given to ABD.

Thanks for your responses. Just to clarify, the second part of my queery is to try and find out where I look for Parish records. For example, I have some ancestors born in Everton Nottinghamshire. However, when I googled the place it now seems to be part of Doncaster, Yorkshire. Am I likely to find these records in Doncaster ? Does anyone know of a web site which shows old boundarys.

I'm not an expert on this area, but if it's the Everton south of Doncaster (see http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NTT/Everton/index.html) then I would suggest trying Nottinghamshire records office, as it appears on GENUKI as being one of the Notts parishes.

Are you sure it's Everton Lincs, not Everton Lancs?

Hi, I am absolutely sure. I am relative newcomer to family history with a lot to learn, but I know my geography. It is a small village on the Nottinghamshire/Yorkshire border - south east of Doncaster.

I have not looked at this in depth but the whole 1861 appears to have been mistranscribed.
They are either Nottinghamshire or Lancashire

Hi thinking about it. I think Bawtry which is quite close to Everton is in three counties - Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and Nottinghamshire.

Why do I always get the difficult ancestors that can't decide who they are and where they are!!
