Can anyone help me please,
My Great gandmother was in this hospital from 1923 until 1930, where it is presumed that she died. I think that she was probably suffering from senile dementia
Can anyone tell me if there is a way that I could find out more details, Please Nita

I assume you mean Leek in Staffs, you could right to the county medical office, I am sure there must be an address online some where, get her death cert that would give you cause of death and maybe more info.

If you search the National Archives hospitals database (put Leek as the town) it'll give you the names of hospitals there and the place where records are kept:

The death cert will give the cause of death, but the Record Office or whoever has the hospital's records may be able to give you a copy of her file.

Do you have a name for the 'hospital'?. One of the main ones in the area was Cheddleton Asylum which served several towns including Leek and was extended in the early 20th century

checked paperwork name and address given County mental hospital, cheddleton, leek staffordshire,so you were right about the hospital, but still not sure how to go about getting records or who to contact. Thanks nita

The County Records Office should be able to tell you which Health Authority have the records for the Asylum (if they still exist).

My husband's grandfather died in an Asylum in 1946 and the county record office gave us the name of the person we needed to write to at the Health Authority to see if they would release his medical records. Apparently the Health Authority have discretion over whether or not to release the records. In our case they said they would and we got lots of information about him including a physical description of him and details of his medical condition and even got a small photocopy of a photograph of him which was the first photo we had ever seen of him, so it was well worth applying.

I had a relative in Cheddleton hospital in the 1920's/30's, and got his records, no problem. Don't remember now where from, but I would say Staffs Archives would be your first port of call.

I got my great grandads records (he died in Cheddleton hospital in 1935) from Staffordshire Records Office a few months ago.
