Without a birth certificate

I am trying to trace my great great granfather's parents but I can find no detail sof the birth certificate. He was born in Salford and was Catholic, has anyone got ideas where i could try next? |

depends what year you are searching for it wasnt compulsory to reg before 1875 .even then some still didn't register for whatever reason |

Have you found him on any census? If so you may be able to cross check all the people with his name and birthplace, hence find his parents, and maybe siblings, you can then order one of their certs to get mothers maiden name. If the surname is not a common one it may be all the easier |

Catholics usallly had a Baptism...so a try with a local Cathloic church may be worth while. |

this is all great info - thanks so much for replying so quick. I'm looking for Augustus Yearsley born in 1862. and he married after 1837 and has a line through his father's name! don't know how he managed that at the time. |

I'm confused. You say he was aged 37 in 1881. So is this not him? Or did you mean you had him in 1901 when he was 37? |
