what do i do when i cant find people on any census pre 1901 , even when they are on the 1901 census ?

Do they have a surname that could of been spelt wrong....if i can't find someone i normally do 1st name & where born

If you'd like i don't mind having a look

I also use Rich* for Richard, Will* for William & so on

every time i type it (esp in google ) it says "do you mean woodall" ...

familysearch brings up loads of woodalls, woodells, and woohulls ??
ancestry . and 1901 says there are no results

damn my dad for having an awkward name !

Forget any idea that there is a correct spelling.

Just because recent generations may have fixed on a particular way doesn't mean earlier ones did. Until the early 20th century most surnames were rather randomly spelled depending on who was doing the record. The vast majority of our ancestors were illiterate so didn't care how their names were written.

So all those variants could be your relations.

i'll bear that in mind..

but im still getting no results for previous censuses although robert woodhall should have been on at least the 81 and 91 being 32 at the 1901 census ..

ancestry just told me five times i had to enter enter a date on marriage records (I HAD!!)

im finding the born in snainton one spelling woodall quite alot

but on the 1901 it says he was born carlton RSO

(my dad was born in a carlton (but the one in notts ) !

im still confused

i found one robert W woodhall with the right birthplace (on the 1891 i think .. but it said he was 26 and if his age had been right in 1901 he would have been 22 in 91
