Why would a marriage be entered twice under different quarters?
My great aunt's marriage is listed under Jul/Sept and also Oct/Dec in 1918.

Don't know, but the answer may be interesting.

Is it listed twice on Free BMD, and if so does this reflect two entries on the scanned images of the national quarterly indexes? Are both parties listed twice? How about the local register office indexes? Do you know whether the date of the marriage is late Sept, or earlier than that? I wonder if, like births, it is the date of registration that determines the quarter, and someone pointed out that in this case, it made the event appear "late"? Where did the marriage take place? Is there a separate register entry you could check (eg church registers?)

Both parties are listed twice on ancestry. I think I'll have to order both certificates to get the answer.

Maybe there was a problem with the first marriage & it didnt take place but the record that was pre filled in in preparation got mistakenly forwarded. & the Actual marriage took place in the next qtr

Have you looked at the actual images or just the transcriptions?

If you post the names we could check.

It's the actual images on ancestry I've looked at. My great aunts name is Minnie Wray married Jul/Sep 1918 W. Ham 4a 530 spouse Clifford and the same entry for Oct/Dec 1918 4a 823

Was there a correction to include his middle initial? I don't know enough about the process of transferring the details from the local register office to GRO to comment.

Strange isn't it but I'm sure I read somewhere before about that happening and it was as Shirley said and the certificate had been prefilled in before hand and sent off by mistake.

Can you order the cert from the actual register office by phone and then you could explain rather than using GRO.

Details are:

"We have registers containing Births, Deaths and Marriages from 1st July 1837 covering the whole current borough of Newham.

The registers also cover all of the old East Ham District and the old West Ham District now in Newham.

All other certificates can be obtained from the Register office in the district where the Birth, Death or Marriage occurred.

Applications can be made in person or by post to the Register Office in Newham.

Of course there is always the possibility that they married twice.
I am sure we had a case where a diplomat married at least three times,once in Paris,I think,again in London and lastly New York.
My memory is not what it was but don't some couples of different faiths marry twice?

I have seen this before where the Marriage was conducted by Banns
And one of the Parishes was late in sending the details into the Records Office.
So the event was recorded twice.

Plus I see the year was 1918……WWI.
Therefore communications could well have been delayed. ......Or the area around the Church could have suffered bomb damages …….

I would like to add that one of my rellie had 2 marriage entries

I got both cert

then i found out he married the same person twice once in a regester office and the other about 6 months latter in a church .

he was in the army and this was around early 1900s

My BM deserted/abandoned us. When I went to The Angel to look up BMD's, I discovered:

2 entries for her marriage to my dad - looks like they couldn't spell our surname.

Checked for me, nothing ... I was born in 1957, discovered mine in 1962 when my brother was born.
It's since been amended but at the time the pain ...
really hurt. x

Did a lot of searching through BMD marriage registration images yesterday and recall seeing about 4 duplicate entries. One differed in that the groom had a second name in the second entry, but the others were all identical, including GRO references.

Wonder if whoever typed the originals lost track of where they had got to and the duplication wasn't noticed?
