Nellie Cheshire, widow, is on 1939 Register with one closed record - in Chichester, with family headed by William Barnett (brother??)

In 1921, aged 40, she is again with William Barnett, but this time Charles aged 71 is there also (born Scotland) and two Cheshire daughters, one born 1902, the other 1908

Charles’s death is recorded in Portsmouth in JFM 1939, aged 89

Don’t know where you’ve been looking, but make yourself familiar with freebmd as a first step. Learn how to use its search facility.

Also, if he had been adopted, there would be no record of mother’s maiden name in the public domain

Records of service are held by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and The National Archives (TNA).

https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-records-of-service

Apply to the MOD first. If they do not have a record, they will pass it on to TNA.
