Maggie Davies in 1911 is stated to be single, as is Thomas - so maybe just a coincidence.
Unless he married a Davies, of course - though I don't see such a marriage in that area.

Her birthplace is given as Troedyshire, Glamorgan. Troedyrhiw on image .

Thomas (the one who died in 1918) joined up in Tredegar - just along the road from Merthyr.

I haven't checked but I think the 1876 marriage was meant to be Tom's parents (David + Jane) ???

I think that we have advanced to this extent.
It is most likely our Tom in Merthyr. I don't know ( from family accounts ) the name of his wife, but did you notice that there was a Maggie Davies also in the same digs in Merthyr? A marriage in 1876 is not him- he wasn't born until 1886
I don't know any more about Betty and Jack-its just those two names written like that on the family tree.
I rang the archives today. I was told that they didn't have any more information about Tom, but that in 1917, the son of Highgate ( a Jones) was killed.) When I told him that it seems that Tom moved away for work he said that this could be the reason there is no more information so no Regiment and no detailed date of death.I am left questioning whether 1916 was correct but at this stage I am drawing closer to a blank.
I have a few things to chase up which I am doing but finding the descendants of Betty and Jack could make all the difference.

Oh, yes, I'd forgotten about Betty and Jack.

The trouble is - Elizabeth, Betty, John, Jack, Maggie, Margaret and Thomas Davies are all such very common names, as is Davies.

And even if Thomas was in Merthyr in 1911, it doesn't mean he stayed there later, so that's not a definite clue.

I found them on FindMyPast, and put in a date of birth - went for the more unusual names at times like Maggie and Lizzie, and for the 1901 censuses and earlier looked for Festiniog - I still got a lot of entries but skimmed by year and location.

Ellis was easier to find as slightly more unusal, and you'd already informed us he went into teaching, which made him easier to identify in 1901, and 1911.

From the National Archives. bear in mind Ellis seems to have already been teaching by census 1901, at the Industrial School in Chorlton, Manchester.

I'm not finding Ellis listed on the Teachers' Registration Council Registers 1914-1948.

His death in 1916 was noted on a family tree drawn up by his niece ( my mother in law). Yes he is mentioned on the memorial in Llan but only with the most basic of information. The online info says the details are held by the archives dept in Dolgellau. We emailed them a week ago but have not had a response however they have a restricted service and only open two days a week.
I am astounded by the speed at which you have found these census details and my failure to do so. Do you have access to other sites which allow you to search and filter according to place of birth?
