just out of interest from a tree on ancestry
March 1864 Kelham Island, River Don The Dodd Family submitted a claim for loss of earnings as a result of the Sheffield Flood. The claim is shown on the Sheffield Flood website and shows that the Dodd Family was employed by Wheatman and Smith. They were File cutters. William claimed loss of 8 days at 5 shillings a day. Also claimed for William Junior, Charles Junior and Henry Junior. Total claim was for £5 -4 shillings. It was Dismissed !!

good clue indeed!
if Elizabeth was born 1816 and daughter Hannah 1833, Elizabeth and William were both very young
possibly the couple simply didn't marry ... or married at a later date
I have a pair of ancestors born just a little later who married at 45, several years after the birth of their last child :-)

Looking at that 1841 Census .................
I would say that they are not living WITH the Smales family.
Instead they seem to be two families living as separate households at the same address
The image is very faint, and it is hard to make out, but the Smales and Dodds are both living at Number 34 ???? street name
I looked on both ancestry and FMP, and could not determine the name of the street!
Therefore, I think it would be very dangerous to assume that she was Elizabeth Smales.
As others have suggested, you need to buy the birth certificate for one oft he children born after July 1837 ................. why not get your Great Grandmother's!
It sill cost you £9.25, post and handling included, from GRO, the General Register Office, at the following site ............
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
NEVER order from any other site, as they will charge you more than the GRO site and they will buy it from them anyway :-)

Sandra since I'm here, I'll make clearer what Shirley said:
'Would suggest getting the birth certi for the mmn
Mar 1851 Dodd John Henry Sheffield 22 687'
'mmn' is code for 'mother's maiden name', something you probably didn't catch
births were registered beginning in 1837, and the mother's surname before marriage is entered on them ... it wasn't recorded in the index until 1911
the birth certificate for that child will show Elizabeth's own birth surname and that is the certain way to trace back so you know you have the correct marriage if you find it
you can order the birth certificate here:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
did you theorise that her name was Smales based on that 1841 census household with her parents (if they were) present, or for some other reason?
