Thanks for looking, safc.
I had wondered if Augustus and Edward were the same person, but had dismissed it. However, as you think the same, I'll believe it again.
I wonder why they decided to call themselves by Annie's maiden name - and then reverted back to Hand - just one of those tantalising and unsolvable mysteries!
Augustus changed occupation from coffee house keeper in 1891 & 1901, to carpenter in 1911. In 1879 he was a GPO trainee, and in 1881 he was a clerk at a sawmill - so the GPO training didn't last long..
A tree on Ancestry says Annie died in 1932. Two census records say she was born 5 years later than she actually was, and her supposed age at death is still a couple of years out.
Deaths Mar 1932 (>99%) Hand Annie 75 Hammersmith 1a 341
Mind you, there are several trees which have clearly copied from one another, saying that she and Augustus married in North Carolina, and that Ethel was born in Edmonton, Kentucky, although all the other details are correct!
Thanks again, safc.

This couple are no relation to me, and I know nothing about them other than what I'll post here. I got side-tracked by them while researching a totally different Edward Gardiner on someone else's thread, and am intrigued.
I first came across Annie and Edward in the 1901 census, and detected from there, but I'll post the relevant records in chronological order (more or less).
Annie was born in Plymouth 1859, and her maiden name may have been Gardiner - but if so, I can't find her birth record.
Marriages Jun 1886 (>99%) GARDINER Annie Fulham 1a 461 Hand Augustus Edward Fulham 1a 461
Annie Hard (actually Hand) in the 1891 England Census Name: Annie Hard Age: 32 Estimated birth year: abt 1859 Relation: Wife Spouse's Name: Augustus E Hard Gender: Female Where born: Plymouth, Hampshire, England Civil Parish: St Sepulchre Newgate Ecclesiastical parish: St Sepulchre Newgate Town: London County/Island: London Country: England Street address: Registration district: London City ED, institution, or vessel: 1 Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 237 Folio: 18 Page Number: 29 Household Members: Name Age Augustus E Hard 28 Annie Hard 32 Robert E Hand 4 - Hammersmith Arthur J Hand 2 - Hammersmith (actually Arthur G) Ethel L Hand 3 - Tottenham Eliza Gardiner 1 - niece, Plymouth Samuel Sewell 28 - servant, cook Lizzie Price 15 - servant, nurse
I can't see Augustus in 1901.
In 1911, Augustus and most of the children are together; Augustus says he's married; no sign of Annie:
Augustus Edward Hand in the 1911 England Census Name: Augustus Edward Hand Age in 1911: 48 Estimated birth year: abt 1863 Relation to Head: Head Gender: Male Birth Place: Titchfield, Hampshire, England Civil Parish: Hammersmith County/Island: London Country: England Street address: 33 Boscombe Rd, Shepherds Bush Marital Status: Married Occupation: CARPENTER Registration district: Fulham Registration District Number: 3 Sub-registration district: North Hammersmith ED, institution, or vessel: 7 Piece: 201 Household Members: Name Age Augustus Edward Hand 48 Arthur George Hand 22 Ethel Lily Hand 21 Ada Gardiner Hand 11
And to round off Augustus's story, here's his death:
Deaths Sep 1921 (>99%) Hand Augustus E 58 Fulham 1a 248
HOWEVER -
In 1901, Annie is with Edward Gardiner, with all the Hand children, now called Gardiner - and Ada, whose surname probably actually is Gardiner:
Annie Gardiner in the 1901 England Census Name: Annie Gardiner Age: 42 Estimated birth year: abt 1859 Relation to Head: Wife Gender: Female Spouse: Edward Gardiner Birth Place: Plymouth, Devon, England Civil Parish: Edmonton Ecclesiastical parish: All Saints County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Registration district: Edmonton Sub-registration district: Edmonton ED, institution, or vessel: 20 Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 1263 Folio: 129 Page Number: 25 Household schedule number: 158 Household Members: Name Age Edward Gardiner 38 - coffee house keeper, Fareham, Hants. Annie Gardiner 42 Robert E Gardiner 14 Arthur G Gardiner 12 Ethel L Gardiner 11 Ada Gardiner 1
So - just out of curiosity, and if you're looking for a puzzle to solve:
Annie's birth? and/or maiden surname? Edward Gardiner's birth ? - supposedly Fareham. Augustus's whereabouts in 1901? Annie & Edward's marriage, if any (I suspect none)? Whereabouts of Annie and/or Edward in 1911?
Any thoughts gratefully received.
I'll look back later.
