I have found a newspaper article in the NZ herald dated 24.8.1889 which states AbrahamTOOVEY, any person knowing his whereabouts please communicate with his sister Laura WEST of Heath Farm, Woolbeding, Midhurst, Sussex, England.
I am trying to find any leads/links to the Toovey/West family to my chap in NZ.
Could someone please do a Census lookup?
Many kind regards if you are able to help me track further information

To Prickles, well that's where it gets all a bit tricky. He lived as husband and wife in NZ, with Jemima Edwards nee Jenkins.
They never actually married. Technically because she was married to Thomas Harris Edwards.
They fell in love and ran away together from Thames goldfields. They later settled together in Warkworth.
On documentation that relates to him he states he was single, but I have not found anything that states otherwise. i.e a previous marriage

Thomas Edwards tried to murder John/Abraham Toovey.......
GRAHAMSTOWN 6th April 1875
At the resident Magistrates Court this morning, a packer named Thomas Edwards was charged with shooting with intent to kill and murder, one John Toovey. The accused went to Toovey's whare, nine miles from town, on Sunday, and fired a pistol loaded with shot, which wounded him in the leg below the knee. Edwards suspected Toovey of having seduced his wife from home some time ago. The accused was remanded, pending the recovery of Toovey to give evidence.
I will send you the image if you don't already have it?
A copy of Abraham's death cert is on Ancestry......died 29th Dec 1879
Also a Newspaper article....NZ Herald dated 5th Jan 1880 (Inquest re his drowning)
I will send you those documents also if you don't already have them?

cc Chris Ho - that is why this man is so darn tricky to trace - a man of 1000 names
cc Prickly Holly - I have the documents that you have mentioned. It has been a long hard journey working back from his death certificate, which does not have a lot of detail on it.
He definately lead an exciting life :-D

To K : it might be worth me getting Laura's marriage certificate as that would have John/Jack/Abraham's parents names on there and would give me confirmation of that link. Thank you for finding the marriage details - much appreciated.
Expert advice required here: I found a document which is for Mariners. It states: John Toovey #452883, born at Wickham, presumably a dob 4/06/1841? Capacity - Seaman, height 5'8" tall, black hair, blue eyes, dark complexion, age when ticketed 18, can read and write
How would I find out further info re this person to find out if there is a link to my lot? Have a look at the births/baptisms?
Any suggestions welcome
