Did he sail to Canada first before going to the US and does the document state where they are going to or doing on this trip?
Lookup of Original Document if possible please have found an entry on Familysearch for the above person as follows:- US Border Crossings from Canada to the US Arrival Date 28th April 1931 Arrival Port Niagara Falls, New York Age: 25y birth Year: 1906 Birthplace: Bolton Accompanied by Sister Lola Departure Contact name: Mother Mrs Gertrude Whitworth
Alice Lola was born in 1908 in Bolton Lancashire to Charles Whitworth and Gertrude Mary Aspinhall
Further searching of records I can't find either James Thomas or Lola in this country UK did they stay in the US
Any help would much appreciated Many thanks in advance :-)

On 1921 census, Robt immig 1919 & rest immig 1920. Not unusual for hubby to go out first to get job, accom, etc sorted, then have family join him later. However, Robt's 1919 trip looks like he's a returning solder, and here's his attestation form dated 28/4/1916: http://data2.archives.ca/cef/well1/223563a.gif http://data2.archives.ca/cef/well1/223563b.gif
Robt's a grinder from Toronto, pob=Bolton, and n.o.k. is wife Hannah in Bolton - clearly our guy.
Name: ASPINALL, ROBERT Regimental Number: 249486 Date of Birth: 14/07/1874 Reference:RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 275 - 1 Item Number:15562 Digitized service file - PDF format: http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B0275-S001 [lucky he's an Aspinall - it'll be nearly 3y before they get to Whitworths Download is 107 pages - 40MB]
After training in Canada, Robt arrives in England 17/5/1917, and is placed in reserve. He has some health problems and is hospitalized three times, returning to reserve in Bexhill and later Witley (near Godalming). His final hospitalization s just after armistice day, when he's run over by an ambulance, breaking his fibuka.
Robt is not w Hannah & kids on 1911 in piece 23404 (a SW Bolton piece $)
