I know ages are often out on census, but the 1871 says John is 1 month old and that is perhaps not quite so easy to get wrong. So if correct then the birth couldn't have been registered in December 1870????? Just a question ...............

The 117 Prescot subdistrict births in 1871q2 occupy pp 569-580 -abt 9 per wk, and John's was on the first page - looking at the local page refs, John's was one of the first 2 births rego'ed that quarter, so what you're saying is quite reasonable, so I'll go for:
