Stiil think Isaac woods was his dad but Martha Eliza was still married to Michael at the time of his birth
Edit just reg as Thomas But the Woods was added at his christening and she didn't have him christened either till after she had married Isaac which she did soon after Michael died plus it wasn't in the same area so no one would have any gossip to pass on A bit of truth stretching going on I think
Births Jun 1861 SLOPER Thomas St Saviour 1d 4

Thomas Sloper was born 1861 Southwark, his father, Michael Sloper, died in 1862 and his mother Martha Eliza Sloper married Isaac Woods in 1863. It seems Thomas was baptised Thomas Woods Sloper in 1867 after she remarried. The baptism record states parents Isaac and Eliza Sloper. The family name of descendants of Thomas became Woods, but on my nan's marriage certificate she put her surname as Sloper. all too confusing............. :-)
Martha eliza's maiden name was Comly.
Thomas's sister Jane Sloper kept her maiden name as Sloper up to her marriage in 1879. Marriage certificate states fathers name as Michael sloper Dec'd.

Am a bit lost here. I read it that Thomas parents were Isaac and Eliza sloper
But as they didn't marry till 1863 it would seem Thomas was given his father's surname of woods as a Christian name
So was he son of Michael Sloper ????
Strange tho on the later census he is described as stepson maybe because he was sloper at birth because that was his mums surname at the time they carried on the pretence , also they had Thomas christened after their marriage and named Isaac as his dad but still with the surname of sloper
Sister jane would be stepchild as she was born in 1857

Thanks Chris - I am liking the 1851 census information! I have not found Michael or Martha on the 1851 census so this information helps.
Michael was the father of Jane born 1857 and Thomas born 1861 in Southwark.

I need some help please in trying to find some records.
Working back from my Great Grandfather THOMAS SLOPER
Thomas Sloper born June Qtr 1861 Southwark. Baptism 27 Oct 1867 St John, Farncombe (nr Godlaming) Thomas Woods Sloper. Parents Isaac & Eliza Sloper. 1871 census 12 John St, Southwark with mother Eliza and step father Isaac Woods and sister Jane Sloper. 1881 census 15 Burrell St, Southwark with step father Isaac Woods. I have all records from his marriage in 1881 to his death is 1931.
From the marriage record for MARTHA ELIZA SLOPER to Isaac Woods, states she was a widow. 22 Feb 1863 Lambeth. From the marriage record for MARTHA ELIZA COMLY to Michael Sloper states he was a widower. 24 Sept 1850 Lambeth. Father: Henry Comly, occ Coachman. Father: Thomas Sloper, occ Labourer. From the marriage record for MICHAEL SLOPER to Mary McAllen, 26 Dec 1847 Southwark. Father Thomas Sloper, occ Salesman
Michael & Mary had a son Michael b1849-d1849 Southwark. Mary also died in 1849. Michael and Martha Eliza’s children: Edward 1851 – 1852 Southwark Eliza Harriet 1854 – 1855 Southwark Agnes 1856 – 1856 Southwark Jane 1857 – 1903 Thomas 1861 - 1931
I need help trying to find birth records for: Martha Comly born Brighton abt 1831 Michael Sloper born ?? Where ??
I only found one Michael Sloper, with parents Thomas & Hannah in 1841 living in Wiltshire and I wonder if this might be him.
Looking for Census records for: Martha Eliza Comly in 1841 Michael Sloper in 1841 Michael & Martha Sloper in 1851 – they were living at 48 John St, Christchurch when their eldest son died in 1852 Michael & Martha Sloper in 1861 – still in Southwark (Michael died 1862 Southwark)
Martha Eliza death is registered as Eliza Woods 1898 Guildford, Surrey. In 1891 Eliza & Isaac were living in Shalford, Surrey.
Hope someone can find something as I need fresh eyes to look for me!
