Find Ancestors

This is a delicate subject for my cousin as his Mum was illegitmate, my aunt was Doris May Cudby her Mum was Susannah Cudby. As far as I can find out she was born in 1874 and died in 1947 in East Ham in London. I think she was born in Yourkshire. I cannot trace my aunt Doll' (Doris) father or the parents of Susannah Cudby, there is a mist around the father of my aunt Doll and we can't find out a thing. Maybe you guys and ladies would help me find out more please

Curious that she was a laundress in 1911, had an illegitimate child in 1912, so where did she get the almost £3,000 in 1947?

That's about £80,000 nowadays!! - I think we can be excused for thinking that Doris's father may have been a very wealthy man ???

The only chances that you have of discovering the name of the father of an illegitimate child are ..............

1. The name is on the birth certificate because he was present at the registration and agreed to it

2. There was a bastardy bond

3. The baby was baptized and the vicar made a note in the amrign of the Parish Register as to the putative father

4. There is a family bible or letter in which the father's name is mentioned.

Kellys Directory in 1906 had this entry

Cudby Susannah (Miss), Laundry, Prince Regent Lane, Plaistow, Essex.

She was still there in 1911 as a laundress working at home, maybe the laundry was her business and this was how she made her money. Even so £3,000 is a lot of laundry

There is another family also living at the same address in the 1911 census, younger than Susannah, but who knows what might have happened.

A great great uncle of mine lived as a boarder with a family and ended up fathering two children with the woman of the house even though her husband was still alive, and living at the same address for at least some of the time.
