Hi everyone Sorry I have only just logged on today-having been out this morning. Thank you all for your hard work. Yes, My gt grandmother was pregnant when she returned to England. The ages on the listing are incorrect for her-she was 38 & my grandfather who was 8 not 6. This is the 1st time I have seen the report of an assault on my grandfather by his stepfather-thank you for that. It's strange that there apparently is no record of them going to the USA. I have searched many a time & also for my gt grandfathers death to no avail. That's why I decided to ask you good people for your help but it seems to be a bit of tough nut to crack. My thanks to you all Maureen

03 December 1906 (Monday) - Nottingham Evening Post - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
A charge against Henry Huddlestone, labourer, 67, Carlton road, of unlawfully wounding his step-son, Charles Clarke, of the same address, on the 24th, was reduced to one of assault, which was denied. The prosecution said that the boy's mother being ill, prisoner had been doing her work on the Saturday named. The trouble arose over Clarke wanting his tea, the boy took up the poker to stir the fire, this Huddlestone took from him, he picked up the tongs for the same purpose, there was a struggle, and the step father hit him twice on the head with the poker. Mr. H.B. Clayton defending, called his client to the witness box, to say that the boy was struck on the head accidentally. He had been in custody eight days, added Mr. Clayton, and it was his first appearance. In consideration of this, the Bench told prisoner he would be discharged.

I can't find the record of them arriving in USA nor can I find their return in 1895. This seems to be them in 1901:

The last child was born in Nottingham. Was she perhaps pregnant when she left USA or is the father Henry Huddlestone who she didn't marry until 1899.

Hi Alviegal
Charles Middleton Clark born 1886 (my grandfather), William, George, Kate & Rose. My grandfather was born at 139 E56th St registered in Manhattan. The death of James aged 3 also shows the same address.

Thanks Malyon, but I don't think it's the right one I'm afraid. James would have been about 27/28 when he went. Maureen

Yes that is their marriage- I think Mary was her 2nd name but, marrying in a Roman Catholic church, they recorded her name as Mary Evelyn. Maureen

My gt grandparents emigrated to New York but I haven't been able to find any details of them going. James Clarke, a plasterer, born 1855 in Ireland married Evelyn Brown in 1881 in Nottingham. Their daughter Gertrude was baptised in 1882 in Nottingham & they emigrated sometime between then & their son James being born in 1883 in New York. I can find the burials in Calvary Cemetery of the 2 children in 1886 & the births of their 5 other children (the surname was then spelt Clark) who all came back to England with their mother after the untimely accidental death of their father. They arrived in Liverpool in 1895. If anyone can throw any light on any of this & the death of my gt grandfather, which I also can't find, I would be most grateful. Maureen
