Find Ancestors

Thanks to all who have helped with this, I think I have solved it, still a bit of guesswork but working on the assumption that the only remaining John (whom I have not been able to discount) was born in 1775 in Whitgift (and some of his brothers migrating to the Hull area) who probably married Ann Atkin in 1808 in Hook, is the John I have been looking for, still no death found for him but on this assumption I can now trace his family back to the late 1500s. There are NO clues from any of the Parish records, but another researcher has come up with the same probabilities so, for now I am going with it. Thanks all for your help and input.

Update ... I can now discount the John born in Hook 1786, he died in 1848 in Goole I found him on the 1841 census.

That's all 3 of my possibles discounted. I don't know where to look now.

The death record for Ann in 1830 has her age as 58, this would mean she would have been 46 when William was born and if the daughter Ann was also hers, she would have been 43 whilst not impossible it seems a bit unusual.

Thanks for that .. so that's one discounted, I had another message to say the one born in Whitgift 1775 was not the right one either, so this leaves me with the one born in Hook. I cant find anything else about him after the birth of John in 1809.

The Sheffield suggestion is a different branch of the family, two John's in the area but their wives were called Rebecca.

I have looked at the Hook connection this John was the son of William Stovin and Esther Leaper. And this is close enough to Hull to be a possibility. He married Ann Atkin and had a son called John born in Hook in 1809.

The death of Ann in 1830 is a possibility, the transcript offers no other clues.

The child Ann could well be a sibling, St Marys is just up the road from Holy Trinity.

The baptism record is in line with Williams age at census records.

The witnesses on the marriage related to Jane Ball so no clues there either.

I have found a John Stovin born 1770 Scotton Lincs, unable to find out what his wife was called, had a son called Anthony in 1798, then lost track of him.

I found another John Stovin born 1775 in Whitgift, no other info on him but some of his brothers did migrate to Hull and surrounding area.

You're right Andy, baptisms can happen at any age but this is the death of the John born in 1793

Complete brick wall with John Stovin first concrete record I have is below:.

Baptism record No. 279: 1818 Holy Trinity, Hull. June 3 (this was the last entry in June therefore I would guesstimate that the date is 30th there is no note to suggest it was omitted at the 3rd, the entry before Williams entry is June 30th the entry after is July 1st) Parents: John & Ann Stovin Abode: Hull Fathers Occ: Labourer

searched the years either side - no other records for John and Ann.

William married Mary Ann Lamb in 1839 in Hull. I have a full data for these two and their offspring. William's marriage certificate says father deceased (his occupation was fishmonger). So John died prior to 1839, cannot find a record.

This was all I found John Stovin married to Ann Bray Holy Trinity Hull 11/10/1802 (if this is correct there is a 16 year gap before Williams came along), the only other thing I found was a death for an Ann Stovin wife of John Stovin in the Holy Trinity for 29/3/1799 but this is too early or it could have been another wife.

I thought I'd cracked it when I found a Holy Trinity record 11/7/1793 John the son of George Stovin but he died in 1794 so now I'm stuck.

Ideas anyone?
