Thank you so much to you all. This now makes sense. It was a 'family tale' that John Sherman born 1885 changed his name from something like Sheridan when he was in the merchant service. So he was born Sheringham, joined the Merchant, jumped ship apparently, changed his name, enlisted as Sherman and married as a Sherman. So all of his brothers and sisters were still Sheringham. At least we now know what his original name was. Was this legal? Very interesting. I now need to blow this out. I still don't know where Irish comes from unless his mother Catherine was from an Irish background. This is reading like a book now! Lesley |
