Would anyone have more than a standard subscription to Genes as I've found a military record for my ancestor but can't access it. |

Thanks greyghost. I was hoping it would say whether he actually went abroad or not. I googled the 32nd company/2nd battalion and apparently not all of them went abroad. I guess my next step will be to apply for his military record. |

It does say that he went abroad in that he was awarded The Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps for the particular engagements he was involved in i.e. Cape Colony, Transvaal etc. You can google each of those to see what they were about. |

Thanks. I guess I read that as the company going abroad rather than him. |

Yvonne, where and when was Thomas Roberts born? It may help locate actual service records (if any do exist). It's always possible that if he'd changed regiments then he could have a different service number previously. |

He was born in St. Helens, Lancs. in 1880 and I have a copy of his attestation which was dated 29 Jan 1901. |

Did you know that he was medically discharged on 4th July 1902 from Bloemfonteine, his Station? |

Quite comprehensive records on FindMyPast (presumably on this site too). The service number wasn't transcribed on FMP - birthplace and year of birth brought it up straight away. |

I hadn't found any of this ... looks like his service didn't last very long. Thank you so much. You never cease to amaze me. |

I've just tried to bring the record up on findmypast but can't find it. The only thing I find is his Attestation, which I have. How did you get to the records you mention ... I've tried birth, name, service no. |

Yvonne, are you just searching Boer War Records? He is the first one to come up if you search under "Military, Armed Forces and Conflicts" |

Thanks, I've now got it ... quite a bit of info and the fact it gives his home address confirms it's definitely him. |
