I am starting a new thread rather than adding to a previous "Irvine" thread because it was marked as answered. I must stress that I am only interested in William Irvine (not any of his ancestors). This is what I know.
William was born in St Andrew's and St Leonard's Fife on 17 June 1830 and baptised 20 June, the second son of Robert Irvine 1792 - 1862 and Elizabeth nee Neish 1798 - 1875
In 1841 census he is with his parents and siblings aged 10 in Marytown Fife.
In May 1847, when William was 16 years old, my great grandfather, James, was born. He was baptised on 28 December that year, the son of William and Jess McGregor. On the 1851 census, James is with Robert and Elizabeth and is shown as grandson. He would later, on his marriage, state they were his parents.
Back to William and Jessie. I have Jessie in 1851 with her father, Charles, and what I believe is another illegitimate child Jessie McIntosh. I have what I think is her death in 1866 in Edinburgh though this is a huge leap of faith (the death certificate shows no parents). I have included this solely to show William was not with Jessie.
And so, William in 1851 is at 23, Galletly Street, a ship's carpenter. I believe that the whole area was lodgings and premises for shipbuilders and seafarers. And after that...not a trace.
I have exhausted myself searching census and for deaths. Have even tried deaths at sea. And thought of emigration but it's quite early for records. There is a William, master mariner...
Name: William Irvine Estimated Age: 23 Birth Date: 1831 Birth Place: Port Galsgow, Renfrewshire Issue Date: 9 Nov 1854 Issue Port: Dublin Certificate Number: 11275
But place of birth is not correct
I think this is him in Cardiff in 1871

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

For our reference:
William Irvine
in the 1851 Scotland Census Name: William Irvine Age: 20 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831 Relationship: Lodger Gender: Male Where born: St Andrews, fifeshire Parish Number: 282 Civil Parish: Dundee Phillimore Ecclesiastical Parish Maps: View related Ecclesiastical Parish County: Angus Address: 23 galletly Street Occupation: Ship Carpenter ED: 13 Page: 8 Household schedule number: 28 LINE: 5 Roll: CSSCT1851_60 Household Members: Name Age Michael Mulley 44 Mary Ruth 30 Maria Mullay 5 Michael Malley 3 John Mullay 1 Joseph Anderson 45 James Henderson 18 William Dobson 18 William Irvine 20
It's possible that he was at sea when later censuses were taken, and even that he may have died at sea, in which case there may be no online record of him.

Here's another William Irvine, birth a couple of years out, born in Scotland, exact place unspecified. He's a mariner in 1861, and a rigger in 1871. All children born Liverpool

Re the master mariner born Glasgow (Lanarkshire) or Port Glasgow (Renfrewshire) - SP shows one William Irvine (or variant) born in Glasgow 1829. None in Port Glasgow or anywhere else in Renfrewshire.
That's searching Scotland in general 1829-32. 33 William Irvines (or variant) in total during that time.

This is the one from 1861 & 1871 censuses, who was married to Charlotte. Still doesn't give a specific birthplace in Scotland. However, as his YOB is consistently 2 or 3 years before 1830, its probably not your William after all:
Wiliam Jevine (Irvine in image)
in the 1891 England Census Name: Wiliam Jevine Age: 64 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1827 Relation: Head Gender: Male Where born: Scotland Civil Parish: Everton Ecclesiastical parish: St Cuthbert County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Registration district: West Derby Sub registration district: North Everton ED, institution, or vessel: 31 Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 2957 Folio: 65 Page Number: 56 Household Members: Name Age Wiliam Jevine 64 - ship rigger - widower Grace Stephens 34 - daughter William Stephens 7 grandson Maud B Stephens 9 grand-daughter Florence G Stephens 5 gr-daughter William Irvine 16 - son Maud M Irvine 20 - son
Charlotte's death: Deaths Jun 1876 (>99%) Irving Charlotte 45 W.Derby 8b 284
Possibilities for William's death (he's not with his daughter Grace and family in 1901):
Deaths Dec 1893 (>99%) - although that would make his YOB c1832 Irvine William 61 W. Derby 8b 329
Deaths Mar 1897 (>99%) Irvin William 70 Toxteth Park 8b 175
Your William's surname is spelled Irvin in his birth record.

Cheers everybody! I am minded, as I was yesterday before deciding to post this, that he went to sea and never came back....he is/was my great great grandfather only biologically :-) ....familiarly and in reality his parents were my gg grandparents!
Anyway, in looking for him today, I found something I had been searching for for two years...that's the beauty of this hobby...you often find what you have been looking for when you are least looking for it!
